We have a take-home essay/test/learning exercise this weekend and a micro final on june 11 and then we're done!!

But what's the deal with the summer after first year at Harvard. I didn't really get a straight answer. It looks like they want their students to do some research/externship thing. Is it mandatory? Can you just take the whole summer off if you really need a break after battling it out first year?

You can do whatever you want. I'm taking the summer off...June 12- Aug 30!! However probably 50% of my class is going to another country (greece, guatamala, china..etc) or doing a summer research project in the US. We have a research requirement, but it's totally up to us when we want to do it.
