Hi,

I'm a non-trad thinking of taking online courses offered by Harvard Extension School. I took all prereqs a while ago in college but I figured nobody at my school would remember me well enough to be willing to write recommendation letters.

So, I thought it'd be a good idea to take a couple of upper bio classes for the purpose of getting recommendation letters but it's a bit hard for me to find a school that is conveniently located for me as well as with affordable tuition rates.

So, I'm thinking of taking some online courses by Harvard Extension but i'm afraid that getting recommendation letters this way would be frowned upon.

Anyone has some inputs on this? Thanks!

I took a couple online courses (not at Harvard) and although I did very well in both classes, I wouldn't want to have to ask those professors for letters. I feel that actual "face time" is important in building the appropriate rapport and getting to know the professors personally enough to get excellent letters. That said, if you have no other options, give it your best shot and be SURE you stand out in a positive manner.

I would bite the bullet and pay up. It will be a drop in the bucket in the long run.

You should get in a classroom for 2 purposes:
1. Recommendation letters. It's not going to be glowing if you're not sitting in class, up front, participating in discussion, and checking in after class occasionally.
2. Proof that you still have what it takes to make good grades in upper level bio. Pre-reqs don't expire, but some schools frown upon not seeing recent upper-levels.

In general, unless you are in the armed service overseas, online coursework is frowned upon by many schools, particularly in the prereqs.
