now that match lists are in and the posturing can cease, would like to know what is up with the Brigham this year.
seems like BW has eclipsed even UCSF in selectivity this year based on who got interviews at my Ivy (not harvard) shop

1. BW has always favored MHS students obviously
2. HMS students preference have always been BW>>MGH>BIDMC

But , that said, rumor is they interviewed fewer people than usual (all time low, < 200) because they had so many HMS applicants this year, apparently because so many students were staying on for a fifth year to do research or graduate school that they had twice as many HMS students applying this year in medicine ..

but they can't accept half their program from one med school can they ?
otherwise its sounds like you have to be junior year AOA , 260 boards at HMS this year to get into BW (just like any applicant from any other med school !!)

what are you all hearing ? and any MHS students please chime in

I can speak to a few things you raise, being an IM applicant from HMS. It's true, there's a big glut of HMS students this year who are matching in IM, and a lot of them want to stay in Boston. Not a lot more students took a year off at HMS my entering year (Class of 2010) than usual, I think there is just a confluence of several factors which have made people a lot more enthusiastic about IM this year than usual (e.g. first student clinic in HMS, new primary care center, lots of attention to IM issues in the med school).

I would say that HMS students historically prefer the Boston hospitals in this order: BWH==MGH>BIDMC. BWH and MGH tend to attract slightly different personalities, and some people fall in love with the BIDMC for their focus on patient safety, teaching and IT.

I highly doubt that BWH/MGH/BIDMC are going to accept a huge amount more HMS students than usual - but of course I don't know. What I can say is that HMS students are smart and generally good applicants, but they aren't all rockstars - there's diversity like in any school. I don't think that match lsits are going to look incredibly different this year than other years.

One place where I think things will be interesting is the primary care programs. There's a LOT of interest in the DGM and HVMA programs at BWH and definitely more HMS interest in those programs than they can support. I think a fair number of HMS students (including me) have a very good chance of going far down their lists because of the number of strong applicants to the relatively small PCare programs this year.

What's this difference in personalities attracted to BW v MGH?

Mr Bip/HMS 4 - thanks for the input/reply-

just how many IM applicants do you expect this year from your class ?
how representative are they ? (ie how many AOAs are applying in IM this year ?)

HMS doesn't have AOA...
