What are your thoughts on the New Pathways curriculum?

I have heard first- and second-hand from a few Harvard students and faculty that students have trouble adjusting to the no-guidance format, and that it doesn't work for everyone. I've also heard that some students feel underprepared for Board exams. Does anyone else have an opinion or anecdotal evidence about this?

Students do very well on boards because they're smart kids who are self-motivated. I believe a year or two ago, Harvard students had the highest average on Part 1. It's true, Harvard doesn't teach to the boards, but most students do a fine job learning on their own. NP isn't really no guidance; they just let you shape your own education. If the students ask, "what should we learn," the faculty would respond, "what do you want to learn?" Some students are frustrated with the lack of strict requirements, but they all end up fine at the end. Harvard's major strength is the people and hospitals; the curriculum, while it is very relaxed and forces to students to learn on their own, isn't really what's making these people into great doctors.

Everything else you said I agree with, but the statement above is not true.

Vanderbilt has had the highest mean score on Step I for the past 3 or 4 years.

Before that, no data is available

Does anybody know where this data can be found?
