Does anyone know anything about the Harvard programs -
Brigham and Women's Hospital, MGH and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center? Any comments are appreciated especially about the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The search function is your friend. You can even limit the search to pathology forums by clicking on the little arrow next to "search" in the blue bar towards the top of the page, and then clicking on "advanced search."

You can further limit your search to poster name, such as myself who is a resident at BWH.

Andy,

could you tell me more about the BWH program then? What are the the things you like and dislike about it?
What about opportunities to do research? Are you happy with your choice?

Andy... a more specific question regarding cost of living.
I read some of your old posts about the high CoL in Boston around BWH. How have you been making it so far? Are you finding the resident salary is enough to pay bills and have a little fun too (food/entertainment...or do you even have time to think about that stuff)? Is the adjustment in salary for CoL reasonable in your opinion?

Thanks a lot Andy - that is very helpful. I undersrand from what you wrote that you are considering to do a postdoc after your residency. Is this what MD/PhDs usually do after their residency training in order to get an academic position in pathology? What are your thoughts on doing research during the residency training? Have you ever considered a PSTP program or do you think doing a regular postdoc is better? I know that some programs give you the money to do research for 2 years. Is this a deal you get at your program?

Does one need to do a postdoc in order to go into academic pathology? Certainly not. Academic pathology can either entail doing clinical service work and mainly doing signout at a tertiary care hospital (as opposed to a community hospital or private practice) or running a RO1-funded basic science laboratory. To do the latter, you must do a postdoc.
