I was looking at the list of unfilled programs from last year.

Harvard's South Shore only matched 2 of 5 spots.

I think this can be interpreted 1 of 2 ways. Either there's something really wrong with the program or they're way too confident.

What do you guys think?

They are pretty "confident". On interviews they tell candidates point blank "we are not impressed with you" if they think they deserve better than the actual applicant. (Happened with me.)

Why do they interview people they have no intention of ranking?
I hope this is the exception to the rule for psych programs.

I'm thinking of going to my interview, but I'm having doubts. I also live more than 2000 miles away and it's going to cost me.

This particular interview happened in a prematch time when there was an "unexpected openning" in South Sore. It is somewhat peculiar why they had an openning that time. I am actually speculating that there was no openning, they were only considering to fire someone if they have found a reasonable replacement.

Regarding your question I think it may be normal that not everybody get ranked who originally received an invitation for interview. Some people look better on paper than on interview, especially if the interview is conducted in a way which is based on making people unconfortable (Harvard Sout Sore style).

I don't want to critisize the program itself. It may not be a bad program but certainly not the same level as the other 3 Harvard programs (MGH, Cambridge, Longwood). It is in a less than desirable location about 45-55 minutes south of Boston (if the trafic is OK, which is almost always bad) in a VA hospital of a formerly industrial town (Brockton VA).

However it may be worth it if you want Harvard in your CV and willing to put up with less than kind faculty.

i interview there as well? since i took step 2 ck late i only have 5 interviews:

uconn
hartford/iol
texas tech lubbock
harlem columbia affiliated (yet to visit)

how would u rank harvard south shore?

i have heard a lot of bad things online and on scutwork but i feel they r all rumors. i do admit the faculty dont seem as friendly as my other 3 interviews but i am not going to a program to make friend although it is important. do u think having harvard on ur cv will help in the long term? also i feel brockton is not bad and it is possible to visit boston from there. i feel it is better than hartford or lubbock any day.

Mr. Sanchez:One must wonder where you get your information and what your agenda is. One might make some interesting guesses based on the verbage, grammar, and timing of your post. Or, one might better apply that time and energy toward more productive aims. Some of us invest our time trying to make ourselves better doctors. Some of us write vitriolic posts on anonymous bulletin boards. Which sort of person would you prefer to train with? Which sort will make a better psychiatrist?The residency you smeared in multiple places on this site is not perfect, but it is damned good. Your attack on Dr. Bauer was low-class and from the experience of the residents at this program, without basis. This is a good residency with a good program director. Wherever it may stand on the rank lists of (yet to be interviewed or matched) med students, it is a solid place to train. Its graduates land great jobs and fellowships. Why the negative vibes, Mr. Sanchez? Why not do us the tremendous honor of coming to interview at South Shore? Make our day.
