Asking for a friend...let's say you were accepted to a program that starts a lot earlier than the others and you send the deposit because you are scared you will not get accepted elsewhere. (Would this automatically stop other schools from accepting you?) But a week before the term starts, you get an acceptance from another school you would be a lot better off financially. The deposit would be lost, but is this even possible?

What can you do legally?

I honestly do not recall the paperwork associated with my deposit. I would suggest to your friend they review whatever was associated with it. I really do not think they are now legally required to go to that school. The deposit is definitely lost (big picture, still saving money for a cheaper school so who cares) but I really can't imagine them being unable to go somewhere else. The original school doesn't even need to know WHY they aren't attending - just that they will not be attending.

The deposit is just viewed as a payment to hold your seat in the program. You are right that your friend would not receive the deposit back, but would not face any negative reprecussions. In fact, I'm pretty sure someone doing just this is how I received a call off the waitlist at the school I will be attending.

there isnt any legal things you need to do. Just attend the school you want to and forfeit the deposit.

Then you will either have to take the risk of going ahead and losing your deposit on the program you've been accepted to and hoping you get accepted to one of the programs you are waiting on before the start of classes or just go to the guaranteed spot you already have. It would look pretty bad to start a program and a week later actually drop out.

Yes I totally agree. I may have to go with a pricier backup that accept me before december while i wait for the others. Thanks for everything and helping me think this through!
