I was chatting with a vet in my practice about how I am applying to vet school and he asked me if I knew anyone at the schools to which I am applying. I guess I looked confused 'cause he then said that, unfortunately, there is an aspect of the process that is political and that having a relationship with someone at the school will greatly increase one's chances. Is that true? Because if it is, I am in trouble.

I think that is the sort of thing that helps if you have it, but doesn't hurt if you don't. I wouldn't worry about it.

I did however, try to get my vet letter of recommendation from a vet who is an alum of the school I most want to get into

Just my 2 cents.

I also can see how it can help you (ie look at the stats at certain schools like Davis, a pretty large percentage of the admitted students also attended that school as an undergrad, so it definitely didn't hurt them). But I also don't think that not knowing anyone is going to hurt you. I think it's a very very small part of the consideration process, certainly much smaller than experience, gpa, gre, etc etc. And as far as I'm concerned, it's not something that I can really change, so I'm not going to worry about it. Sort of like that whole minority thing. Schools actively consider how much diversity you would bring to their school, esp. when considering out of state students, but I'm very vanilla in most things, so that won't help me, but I don't consider it to be something that hinders me either (others may disagree with this, but there's little I can do about it anyway ).

And you can also look at it like this, the vet community is very small, this is true. So if you know someone, it might be an advantage at some schools, esp. if that someone is someone important in your field of interest.

On the other hand, the vet community is very small, and there are politics involved, as there are politics involved with any community. So it is just as possible that Murphy's Law is going to screw you over, and the ad comm in charge of your application could very well be a foe of your Very Important Evaluator rather than a friend. I've never heard of this happening, but I imagine it's quite possible (esp. considering the eh, colorful personalities of most of the people involved 😀).

I'm sure it happens in vet school just as much as it does anywhere else, unfortunately. I thought about posting a thread asking just how much it goes on, but never got around to it. I don't know if you applied to Penn, but their entire supplemental consists of a 1/2 sheet of paper asking if you have any family members that are vets or if you know of anyone that went to Penn. 🙄

I didn't get a LOR from a vet I worked with because she is on bad terms with the vet school she graduated from (which I applied to), and I applied to the school that one of my LOR writers went to. Of course, I also was interested in that school.

Either way, it can't hurt. I wouldn't worry about it if you don't, though!

From the people I have talked to who are familiar with the admissions process (at least at Ohio State), the names are taken off the applications during academic review to ensure objectivity. During the interviews they know your name, of course, but your actual application, personal statement, etc., are titled with an ID number instead of your name. I could see where having a recommendation from an alumni vet or a professor of the vet school could be beneficial, but otherwise I don't think that knowing faculty or administrators would be much of a help. Or so they say.

If it makes you feel any better, one of my vet recommendations came from someone who was an alum, and I got rejected. And it was my in-state! But it's all good, because I'm pretty durn happy with where I am right now anyways😀

I work with a vet who is on the board of directors at one school, and has a building wing named after him there! He's recommended 3 prevets already and NONE have gotten in - so I'm not getting my hopes up. But maybe 4 is a charm?

Knowing people who know you, how hard you work and how good you are to be around helps alot more down the road with internships and residencies. It really doesn't matter (beyond good letters of recommendation) for vet school. In the 250+ apps I will read this year I may recognize 5% of the letter writers and know/like 1% of them.. That said it will likely not change my overall assessment of the application as there is so much to evaluate.

Also.. Deans of admission and Ad Coms get a little tired of taking calls from VIPs offering their personal recommendation. Save it for the LOR.

So don't worry 🙂

It may matter at some schools, but it doesn't at Ohio. Faculty members' children haven't gotten in on their first round of apps.

At A&M the first cut is done solely by computer based on GPA. No names included. Then the interviews are decided from letters of recommendation/essays on blind applications (no names on them). Then when you get to the interview if one of the interviewers knows you, they're supposed to leave and go get another interviewer.

If it makes you feel any better...

My family is close with someone on the board over at a certain top vet school who, in turn, is close with the Dean of the Vet school. Their letters on my behalf did nothing. I was told I made it through the 1st cut on my own....but wasn't able to make it through the 2nd cut. So either their influence isn't taken into consideration at all....or perhaps it is, just after you're offered an interview...who knows?

Alas, if something's not meant to be....

I'm in Glasgow now and absolutely loving it!!! =D

Oo, yeah..I hope not or all the SDN CSU applicants will be trying to bribe you (hmm, that might not be so bad... 😀)

Remember the scene in Godfather III where Michael is trying to go legit..

"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in"

I was just thinking that...

I do find it awesome and strangely comforting that an Adcom member is an AC/DC fan though.

Hey Moonpaw! I applied to UTK this application because a current student wrote something on here ages ago about how much s/he was liking it--so I took their advice!

That's why it's on my "interested in" list as well - so many positive things I've heard on this thread. I might not have all the pre-reqs, but if I do, I might give it a shot.

My family is good friends with one of the vets/professors at OSU and when I was applying he told me that the process was very political but who knows

1. I got into Ohio State without knowing anyone there.

2. All three schools I got into I had no alumni writing letters and didn't know anyone there.

3. The one school where alumni wrote letters and I knew people there, I got waitlisted.

The process is based solely on points accumulated. It is not political at all.

I didn't know anyone at 2 of the schools I got into last year, and the third school knew one of my ELOR writers and don't really like him much, and I still got in. I am sure that it happens sometimes, but I would not think it would matter too much. My .02. 🙂

Fargeese - how are you? How is Tech? I don't know if you have seen the "factors" thread but I would looove to hear your thoughts on Tech over there! Hope all is well!

I wouldn't worry too much - when I applied my first time I had a recommendation from a person on the interview committee - I was rejected flat out. Second times a charm, I hope :luck:
