I saw this thread when I clicked on the pre-med site, and was wondering if anyone had luck getting interviews the "non-conventional" way. For example, of friend of mine's cousin called USC a year or 2 ago when he had not heard from them for a while and said something to the effect of, "hey, I'm so-and-so, and I'm going to be meeting with UCLA next week and was wondering if, since I have to take a long flight to get there, I could get an interviewe scheduled for the same week?" Well, the lady put him on hold, and got back on a minute later and said, "You know what, looks like we just had a cancellation, how is Friday at 2:00pm?" He wasn't lying, he was going visit UCLA, actually just the LA part, for his sisters wedding and I guess they thought, if he's got an interview at UCLA, we should check him out. Anyone heard (or done) something similar? Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Was your friend already on the interview list? USC also does not have a traditional interview. The interview consists of groups of studens working on on PBL case and they 'interview' a lot of students in each session. Thus if he was already on the list they could have just worked him into the herd. Generally speaking, no, dental schools do not just hand out interviews upon request. Exceptions that I am aware of is Creighton, which normally doesn't conduct interviews as a part of their application proces. They carefully screen applicants and usually only interview on specific days and prefer to schedule them in advance. If you call a school they might be willing to give you a tour, but that is very different from the interview.

This is interesting because my bro., who is currently a fourth year at USC, had a similar experience. He didn't get in anywhere and it was already spring. He called up USC a few times (they hadn't yet made a decision on his file) and they decided to give him an interview.

They might have anyway but to hear him describe it they were moved by his interest.
