For those who have researched or bought private health insurance, can you recommend affordable plans with good coverage; provide guidance/suggestions on things to consider and beware of when buying health insurance (hidden costs, catch-22s etc...)??

I'm looking for family health insurance because I'll quit my job soon... I'm interested in both short-term & traditional plans with low deductibles and pre-existing coverage. Also do you know of any consumer-friendly online resource/website that recommends health plans??

Any help will be appreciated.. (FYI, my school's insurance sucks so I have to get something from the market)

Thanks

My plan is through Assurant. It's not practical at all for regular doctor visits and typical health maintenance kind of stuff since there's a $1000 deductible and no prescription coverage, but it's dirt cheap at $50/month. Once the coverage kicks in, it's actually a pretty good plan. They pay 80% of everything until I've payed $3000 out-of-pocket and then cover everything after that. I mean, $3000 is a lot of money, but when you're looking at a bill 10 times that large, it doesn't sound so bad. If you're looking for something that's emergency coverage only, that'd be a good choice.

If you need a more complete plan, Kaiser tends to have really high customer satisfaction. My family has had fairly good luck with BCBS, too.

Thanks to all of you, I live in florida. I've never heard of Kaiser down here, but I'll look it up!! I currently have BCBS through work and it's great. The best I've seen thus far that provide 80 coins, $1000 ded, script coverage will run me about $450/mo!!! (that for a couple (mid-twenties with no kids) 😡😡 It's crazy but I'll look into the link you guys suggested..
