has anyone deferred a year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have recently been accepted to KCUMB then applied for and was granted a deferment. When I contacted the school to receive information before I applied for deferment I was told that it was fairly common and the school had no reservations about letting student defer as long there was a good reason for it. They also stated that when I sent my request I would need to list and explain my reasons for wanting deferment, so I was under the impression that I was to be as specific as possible.
Just for a point of reference, I decided to defer because of two reasons. First, my wife will not finish school until spring 2007 so we would have had to spend a year apart. Secondly, I have recently received my paramedic cert and I would like to work as a medic for a while to get some additional "real patient" experience.
Disclaimer-- KCUMB is the only school that I am familiar with so I have no idea what other schools think or expect when students apply for deferment. So, for accurate information contact your school and get these details directly from them.

I deferred at Western/COMP so that I can finish my Ph.D. CCOM on the other hand didn't allow me to defer.

You can always call and ask them or look for their policy about deferral on their web.

While I've never done any such thing, I think it could definitely come in handy, if you were an out of stater who was accepted into a state school. That way, you could defer your admission, and move to said state. Live and work there for year, and viola, i) You become a state resident and pay state tuition fees, ii) You've earned enough (hopefully) money to help get you through the first year, or a big chunk of it.

I deferred at VCOM last year before ultimately declining my admission. Make your reasons specific & if you can highlight why these reasons will make you a better physician or enhance skills/growth, etc. then most schools should not have a problem. I focused on education & research in genetics. Also, make your request as early as possible, since many schools try to fill their class towards the end of the application cycle, making it a little tougher to get the deferment.

I am headed to PCOM this fall & they recently sent an email stating that if we are thinking about requesting a deferment that we should do so soon...it makes me think they are open about these types of requests since they broach the subject.

Some schools are very open about their policy.

I deffered for a year at LECOM-Erie to finish my MS degree.

I also applied knowing I was going to ask for a deferral, but kept it a secret until I was accepted.

I recieved a deferment from NSU simply by telling them I had financial issues. I didnt really get into it that much because what more do you need to say when you want a year off to work and not go so much into debt.
Good luck the worst they can say is no......
