This summer I plan to do part time (300 hrs). Would I be able to study for MCATs while I do this program? I plan to take it in July. I want to live in a dorm. I believe I can but just want to know how the program is.

Sitting in my office with AmeriCorps right now lol. I think it depends on the position, but usually you have some flexibility with your hours and the work is laid back. In my case I'm just like other volunteers, so I work my own hours and do my own projects. I think with the 300 hour position you average around 25-30 hours a week? Seems like you would have plenty of time to study, and it would be a great summer opportunity. Also a nice experience to talk about in interviews.

i was on the americorp site and didn't see anything about volunteering just a summer...everything i read said you had to commit on at least a 6 month basis...
how'd you go about volunteering for just a summer?

Ours is with the University. The volunteering office has 300 hour positions available for the summertime, but these are not listed on the AmeriCorps website because they're only for students. You might want to check out and see if you can find anything like this. Or contact local organizations and see if they have positions available.

Can I work during the program?

I worked 20 hours a week at a different job. I am sure it probably just depends on your site, the number of hours you will have to work, and the schedule. It also depends on whether you're doing a VISTA, or program AmeriCorps - as I've heard you can't work if you're doing a VISTA program. There are also other rules you should look into, but I had no problems and I really recommend it!
