I had that happen at 2 schools, but who knows if the LOI had anything to do with it. I sent the LOI and the admissions office said they put the letter in my file. About 2-3 weeks later I got an interview invite (MSUCHM and TUFTS), but they may have been planning to invite me before they ever got the letter, so who knows. Send it, it can't hurt and it may help!

Doesn't that kind of undermine the idea behind a letter of intent? I think adcoms know LOIs are bull****.

Why is it bullsh1t to let the school know you are still interested?

are we talking about letter of intent or letter of interest?

What's the difference between the two? I am talking about a letter sent to a school that you have not heard from yet to say "hey, I am still hoping to hear from you".

I thought we were talking about letters of intent... isn't that what LOI stands for? A letter of intent means that you intend to go there to the exclusion of all other schools, meaning that you can (should) only send one.

Oh, that is not what I was talking about. that would be redundant.

This is what derf wrote on another thread regarding LOI:

"There are 2 LOIs, a letter of interest and a letter on intent. The former is used to express continued interest in the school and various reasons for the interest. The letter of intent is a binding (not contractually but ethically) written statement where you declare an intent to enroll in that specific school if accepted, kind of like a late early decision (EDP) agreement.

If you write a letter of intent to that school, you agree to drop all other acceptances if the particular school offers you a spot.

I think it includes basically what you see valuable in the school (academics, curriculum, location, communal ties) with the intent statement."

Aren't letters of interest kind of redundant, since your very application indicates interest?

No, it's not redundant to keep contact with the schools you want to attend.

you can write a letter to a school expressing your continued interest without telling them absolutely that you would go there. that is what i was talking about. i sent 3 to schools i was very interested in that hadn't invited me for an interview yet. so, we'll see what happens.

I was waitlisted by 6 schools last year. Sending in letters of intent had little effect to no effect.

Still, it can't hurt.

i sent in like 10 letters of interest last week. It was very short and basic, told htem i was still interested and gave them updates on my research projects, and i also sent my grades from summer and this fall term (not included in my amcas app). i guess ill let you guys know in a few weeks how they turned out
