on their period?

I always have the worst headaches and cramps on my period. I am due to take my MCAT on the 2nd day of my period (the worst day for me). Any advice? I'm thinking I may take Ibuprofen and whatnot, but other than that?

I don't really get headaches or cramps during my period, but other than taking ibuprofen or motrin, I don't really have any advice. Just bring several pills with you to the exam, since its a long test, plenty of tampons, etc. Stretching during breaks would probably do you well, too. I know there are plenty of videos on youtube that explain how to massage away menstrual pain or stretch to reduce cramps. You may want to try some out and see if any work for you.

Funny, I find that I'm noticeably dumber whenn I'm ovulating (when estrogen is supposed to be the highest.) All sorts of evolutionary explanations for that , I'm sure. 😉 Conversely, some of the things I've done the best on (tough exams, etc.) have been during that time of the month. I'm also schedule to test at that time but don't get any severe problems. I'd recommend taking a practice test on day 2 and see how it goes. If you don't feel well or can't focus, consider rescheduling. I'm sure it wouldn't make a huge difference, but even if it's for your own psychological comfort... we all need all the help we can get on this one.

Ponstel. The miracle drug. it's an NSAID but it must be prescribed. If you have the worst cramps, nausea, vomitting, headaches or whatever, it should take care of it. Talk to your doctor. I definately wouldn't take this exam during that time of the month. Personally, i'll opt for seasonale, just skip the period for the MCAT month and resume later. If seasonale is too expensive and Ponstel is the best option, it'll be like nothing is going on. All the best.

I think that starting birth control would be foolish so close to the exam because bc has so many side effects for so many. I usually do a bunch of yoga stretches to try to relieve the pain, but I'm just worried my concentration will be effected.

Lol, there's no way to delay the period like exercising rght? I think i'll just have to suck it up and deal.

Try to stay focused on the test; take ibuprofin in the safest highest dose you can. Focusing on the test will help you forget about any discomfort that ibuprofin doesn't remove.

Haven't taken the MCAT yet, but I've taken plenty of tests at school, and I've always managed to do well regardless of menstruation. 🙂

Good luck!

I took the mcats on 1/28/11 and had gotten my period THE NIGHT BEFORE literally @ midnight. - found it to be a blessing though cause any later and I wouldve probably freaked out. Didn't affect my test though. Didn't even take meds for it.
