I am a Chinese citizen, but I am a permanent resident. By July of next year, I will be eligible to apply for American citizenship. Then it will probably take half a year for me to get it. Will my citizenship status affect my chance of getting into medical school? Should I wait for a year to get my citizenship?

Thank you. Hopefully someone who is involved in the admission process could give me some suggestions.

There are so many chinese MDs (transplanted from China) these days. You should join your local chinese ppl club and ask around -- I'm serious about this. You're only as good as your network in a lot of situations, especially when trying to get advice.

Or if that's not accessible, you can try booking your medical appointments with only MDs who have chinese-sounding names -- also serious about this one. You have to get health care sometime right? So why not turn that into a networking opportunity? ... But of course, don't be too bothersome. if it's a chinese resident physician, they're probably just as busy as all the other residents who want you to ask your medical problem and then get out so they can do the 1000 other things on their list that day.

Short of those 2 ideas, hopefully ppl on this forum with similar backgrounds as you can give you better answers.

you need to look at the requirements for particular schools, because many require you to be a US citizen; or they require you to be a citizen to be eligible for financial assistance. a few don't have this requirement and are more international-applicant friendly. you gotta put in the hours and find out on their websites...or hopefully someone else has researched it.

Nope, it will not affect your chances. Both US citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) are eligible for medical school admissions. Permanent residents are not treated as international applicants.

This. I know several permanent residents who are med students. They had no problems with admissions or financial aid.
