My current GPA is 2.3 ( i know, really bad). I took my first semester of pre med courses bio, English, math 98, speech. I had to withdraw from these classes. my mother had surgery and needed help around the house so i had to stay home to tend to her. I also got a new job during that time. Point is my schedule was terrible. It was impossible. My mother has healed and I now have more than plenty of time for school and studying.

Question is, do i have time to bring up my GPA for med school or is it a hopeless cause, i do plan on retaking all the classes I did fair and poor on....

Thanks for your answers

Cody

If you retake classes you did poorly on, you can apply to DO schools. Though with your military vet status, I wouldn't be too hesitant to apply to some MD schools so long as you meet their minimum GPA cutoff. I'm not too sure on the latter... but definitely DO is well within the realm of possibility so long as you do fine on the retakes.

Insanity. Retake your undergrad... start over.

im at the beginning of my undergrad. The only classes i have are my ems classes. jw if there is enough time to have a decent gpa to get into a decent school.

So the gpa is 2.3 after only one semester? How many credits is that? If it's not too many, I'm sure you can bring it up quite a bit.

I'm glad your mom is on the mend!

Assuming:
1) 15 credits have been taken
2) You will graduate with 130 credits total (~10 additional for retakes)
3) 3.7 GPA (A-) average for the remaining for your degree

You will have just over 3.5 GPA.

You will have just under 3.4 GPA.

Average MD matriculants have roughly a 3.7 GPA. Many get in with less. You're honorable service is without question a boost for your application and I wish the best of luck to you.

Assuming you retake 30 credit hours and maintain an average of 3.7 GPA for the remainder of your time at school you will end in the ballpark of 3.2-3.3.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this grading system you're working with. Are you combining your ems credits with undergrad credits to come up with the 2.3 gpa?

Yes i am, i looked up my transcript scores and all my EMS classes and my first and only semester of my undergrad was all combined. I withdrawn from all my classes during my first semester of undergrad except one ( i guess it was past the drop date and i couldnt drop) so im going to talk to my school about "forgivness program"

Sorry i know its confusing. I reaaly do appericate your help

No problem. I think if you work really hard and crush the rest of your classes, that will show a really good upward trend, which will help you. You'll probably be a good candidate for DO, if not MD. You can do it!

Oh! That changes things. If you're in the beginning of undergrad, you'll have plenty of time to bring it up. Just do whatever it takes to get your As.

But if it doesn't pan out for the MD route, you can still apply to DO schools with retakes. Either paths are awesome.

Thanks for your help and quick respones. i really want to get into a M.D program and willing to surrender to hard work. i heard that D.O are in a way looked down on by M.D's

That's silly. Only dumb MDs look down on DOs. In this current day and age, they are equivalent. In fact, they do the same residencies.
