Hey y'all,
I currently have a 3.41 GPA/ 3.46 AMCAS sGPA/ 3.71 AACOMAS GPA. While my overall GPA isn't the best, my GPA for the most recent 94 credit hours is a 3.8. I pretty much started from scratch on a new degree at a new school and became a mature, responsible student. When I started back, my GPA was below a 3.0. I'm now wondering if I've had enough grade/transcript repair to allow me to take the MCAT during my "senior" year and apply after graduation, or if I need to take more classes in a post-bacc or SMP.

(Other info: white, NC resident, financially disadvantaged, rural background. 1000+ paid clinical employment, 1000+ nonclinical paid employment, 500+ hours non-clinical volunteering, tutor/student mentor, 1 year research assistant.)

Thanks for reading this and thank you for your input!

You're fine. Especially with the trend. Take the MCAT early enough to submit applications at the beginning if the cycle, and do well on it. I know plenty of people in MD programs with your stats, but they all had 508+ MCAT scores.

Oh sweet, that makes me feel a lot better! Thank you. I wasn't sure if MD programs were realistic with my GPA or not so that is really cool to know (depending on my MCAT of course).

i have the same type of trend and a very similar gpa to yours. i think as long as your mcat is over a 500 you should be fine. good luck!

Thanks man! I just saw that you're reapplying next cycle. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
yeah i think my super late app is what really killed my chances since i havent heard back yet. just apply early with a >500 mcat and youll get somewhere i assume. hoping the same for myself lol. will do!

94 hrs at a 3.8 means that realistically, you're a 3.8 GPA.

So yes, you have admirably reinvented!

Thank you so much @Goro I was hoping to hear from you! Your guide for students who need reinvention has been so helpful for me and I have been trying to to feel discouraged about my cGPA. I know this is a marathon and not a sprint but boy is it a relief not to hear I need an expensive SMP.

Now go rock the MCAT!

Nice work OP! Just study hard for that MCAT, apply early, and you should be golden. I'm a reinventor as well applying right now and I wish I had gotten everything in earlier

Follow-up question on this if you don't mind, Jedi Master Goro: I have a 3.7 the last 90 hours as well, but with a 3.2 overall, 514 MCAT rather than a 3.4 like the OP. Could that difference in overall GPA be a reason that I haven't heard anything from schools or was it really just the timing of my application? (complete late August/September for MD, October/November for DO)

Time and school list for MD, plus essays and LORs; Don't know for DO.

Was very late for MD, not sure why no DO love, how many schools did you apply to? I got numerous DO II's with a similiar GPA and MCAT but no reinvention

Would reapplying day one this coming cycle give me better odds, or would it be better to wait a year? Here's basically the options that I have been considering:

1. reapply day one (will have about 1200 more hours working as an ED scribe, 100 more of both clinical/non-clinical volunteering)
2. wait a year and do something like americorps or peace corps in the time being. I could also combine 1/2 and start that before reapplying this summer
3. apply to SMPs for the fall and reapply in 2020 (I don't know about this one since it's a risk and I think I've already shown pretty good reinvention, but I feel like its the best way to prove I'm ready for med school coursework)

I applied to 12 DO and 13 MD. I've only heard from 3 of them so I'm hoping to get some interviews late in the cycle but who knows haha

probably timing. november is pretty late i think.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

Thanks for the replies guys!
