Have interviews ever held anyone back?
Started by ABoutyrski
of course a bad performance would affect your chances, thats what interviews are for... to weed out the socially inadequate for the dental profession.
For example, during a usc interview (pbl case) a girl literally said only one very short sentence over the span of an hour... theres no way usc would accept her over all the others that are actively participating

what if you are talkative but you do not answer the questions very well?

Then I would deny you as an adcom. What if your a talkative dentist but you can't answer your patient's questions?
Sociability and personality are just as important as intelligence and competency to be a successful dentist. Of course people get denied from a poor interview. Only one school accepts pretty much all interviewees, and that is UoP and even they denied one guy. That means every school there are people who don't get in due to a poor interview, with some schools like Midwestern only accepting one out of six people who interview.
Is it just me or does it seem some (only some) are socially inept, socially ******ed, and socially incompetent, yet they have 4.1 GPA's and 23 DAT scores and are accpeted to every school they apply to.... just venting cause Im jealous of their stats
Stonybrook interviews 270 applicants and accepts 39 so there are many people who get rejected due to poor interviewing skills.

LOL that's a good example of this autistic kid that got accepted into pharmacy at my school due acceptenace into the program being primarily statistics based. He's a brilliant kid, don't get me wrong. But if you have a 2 minute conversation with him, you can tell there are some issues. Good thing he can't get passed the med school interviews here.

Accepts 39 or matriculates 39? I dunno the numbers, but they might accept over 100 and then 39 end up coming? though numbers aside, I do agree with the point you're trying to make. For most schools, it's about 1/3 of interviewees that get rejected because of poor social/interviewing skills.
I would say of say school X, out of 400 interviews, 300 are going to be "good" or "went well" yet they can't accept all 300 so therefore your stats come into effect and obviously matter.
Trust me, people do get rejected due to poor interview skills/bad manners. There was actually one person sleeping during an adcom presentation at one of my interviews, and not just for like a min, like that ENTIRE time. lol. And then some people are just weird and don't talk to anyone during the interviews, so I mean, there are those people out there. I have encountered them...
