Hello,
I just have a few questions. I am going to be senior, however I have not even done my personal statement yet. I also have not received any letters of recommendations, or even taking the DAT yet. I was wondering what are my chances to be admitted to dental school at this rate. My current GPA is 3.7. Thank you in advance for your input!

Is there a reason why you are in this situation?

I think it's definitely possible but everything will be rushed.

I guess there isn't any reason besides my procrastination. Thanks for your reply. How would you suggest I go about this?

In my personal opinion... I think you should "go about this" by taking your DAT next April or May and then applying next cycle.

Take time to write your personal statement, and request LORs.

If you rush this cycle you have everything working against you.

By the time your application gets to schools it will be October? I dunno, it looks like procrastination to every dental school at that point.

Its one thing to have an app in and have to wait for letters... but its another to have not started at all.

Take a gap year.

It really all depends on how well you can do on the DAT. First you need to schedule the DAT and you will need to study for it. You can also complete your AADSAS application and find people to write you letters of recommendation (generally 2 science professors, and 1 dentist)

There is so much work that goes into applying. To be honest it doesn't really sound like you are that committed or knowledgeable on the process. Stop the procrastinating and apply now. Schedule the DAT and start studying for it if you hope to have any chance at being accepted to dental school for Fall 2013.

I agree with JAWSSS; it would probably be best to apply the next cycle.

I would really like to apply during this cycle as long as I have a chance. I have been studying for the DAT however I have not chosen a date to take it as I want to be as prepared as possible. I have ideas for the professors who may be willing to write a letter for me. One of which confirmed, but required that I have a personal statement first. I have shadowed dentists last year, however not long enough to get to know them well. Please any advice is helpful. And for further information, I am a Biological Sciences major at Rutgers University with a minor in Economics. I am going to graduate after the next semester. Thanks again.

you sound like you have not researched "applying to dental school" enough.

Those letters are going to take a long time to get requested, written, sent, processed, and sent to dental school. Not to mention the fact that for one of them, you're going to have to have a polished personal statement written before you even get this professor to start writing. Personal statements take a long time to write.

And everyone wants to be as prepared as possible to take the DAT,,, But at some point you have to take it. If you wait until next cycle you can be REALLLLY prepared to take the DAT and you can have all of your letters in and your personal statement written.

I was in your position when I first applied. I did not receive a single interview. Don't waste your money.

It sounds like you're ill prepared and it is a question of whether you can get your application in as soon as possible and take the DAT. If that is not possible then your chances are very low. I've procrastinated applying to dental schools two years ago. I applied to 17 schools. I only had 1 interview and I was not accepted.

This time I didn't procrastinate and I already have some interviews lined up. Either you can apply now or you can start preparing for next application. Its your choice.

Okay, I just wanted to thank you guys for your responses. I think I am leading towards waiting for the next cycle. Even if I do get the application in on time, what are the chances of being admitted during rolling admissions?

While 'on-time' is relative, in my opinion that would mean having your LORs, DAT, transcripts received and verified, personal statement done, and AADSAS application competed and mailed out by the end of August. Preferably sooner. I am afraid it is too late to have your app done any time soon since you haven't started yet. However, if you crushed the DAT and finished in September you may still stand a chance of interviews/admissions. To give you a realistic probability is impossible without knowing when your app will be complete, your DAT, and what schools you apply to.

Depends on your DAT scores, EC's, LOR's, personal statement, etc etc. Mostly the DAT scores though. if you can get everything in by September and manage to get 21+ and just want to get into a dental school and not some super competitive school then you should still be fine.
