I already got several secondaries asking for more money. has anyone got any screened secondaries, yet?

some asks for another essay, what a hassel. i would be happy to write one if i know they already are considering my application.

i have received secondaries from northwestern, duke, loyola, and wake forest, all of which screen applicants.

I've received secondaries from some schools that screen as well: Duke, Northwestern, Case Western, and VCU. I may have received others from schools that screen, but those are the ones I'm aware of.

i have a book that tells you the number or percentage of screened application that they send out to applicants.

if you're intersted in any school, let me know, i will look it up for you.

MTY, what's the name of that book? I'm interested in who screens applicants.

What are the figures for Case Western and Wake? I've gotten most of my secondaries but not those...of course, I was late getting through AMCAS, only transmitted two weeks ago.

No offense anyone, but I don't think Duke screens. Would be nice if they did. The ones I know for sure who screen are: Northwestern, Stanford, all of the UC's, Yale.

no, yale doesn't screen. It is the first one which sent me a secondary asking for $65.

Well, the first line of the letter they sent with their secondary says, "Your completed AMCAS application to the Duke University School of Medicine has been received and screened."

Also, their website says, "Upon receipt of the application materials from AMCAS, if credentials indicate, a supplemental application and other information will be mailed which will serve as notification of receipt of the application from AMCAS. "

It also says, "Data on each candidate are screened using a computer model of our matriculated students. Those selected to receive a supplemental application are carefully evaluated by the Committee on Admissions."

It sounds like they do screen to some degree -- can anyone else confirm this?

Regarding Duke, point taken. I guess I was under the impression they didn't screen b/c I don't know anyone who didn't receive the Duke secondary, also they sent theirs out relatively quickly after the AMCAS transmittal -- this leads me to believe that if they really do screen, it must be somewhat superficial.

Youngjock -- you are right about Yale, my mistake.

Duke does screen applications because I had a friend last year who didn't get a secondary. I think they just use a formula with your GPA and MCAT, and if you don't get a certain scaled score, you're out.

Also, Stanford's secondaries have started to go out. They are on-line this year, which is nice because it is huge -- pretty much like AMCAS in a different form. They ask you not to repeat information but instead to expand upon things that may or may not have been in your AMCAS application.

The fun continues. . .

According to Peterson's (perhaps outdated), Duke sends out secondaries to about 60% of AMCAS applicants. I do not know how this compares to other screening schools. But I know people that have received a secondary from Duke, but have been rejected from other private schools such as Northwestern. But judging from the fact that the average MCAT of Duke 1st year students (USNEWS&WR) is higher than Northwestern's, maybe it is possible that Duke screens GPA more superficially than Northwestern at this stage or perhaps that the criterion for jugdement are entirely different. Who knows?

But I know one thing... the secondary for Duke is tough. I found the question that they asked me "Describe how you dealt with a moral or ethical situation in your life" to be challenging as this really gets to the respondant's level of maturity and also to the crux of what one stands for as a human being. This challenge was compounded by the two week deadline. Also they asked about my SAT scores and high school class rank...And I once foolishly believed that those atrocities would never come back to haunt me...

I received a screened secondary from VCU and haven't even taken the MCAT yet. Should I feel lucky or do they send secondaries to most applicants? Stats, advice, would be great.

Regarding VCU, are you a Virginia resident? It seems that VCU sends secondaries to 75% of the Virginia residents who apply; 40% to out of state applicants who apply.

Do you happen to know the VCU secondary cutoff for out-of-state? Also, could you share their secondary essay question?
Thanks!

Has anyone recieved secondaries from any of the UC's, I know there a bit slow in sending them since they screen them. Does anyone know what percentage of people/what stats they send them too?

Also has anyone recieve a secondary from Chicago (Finch) Medical College? If so what do they ask.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Shania,

Hopefully I can help you a little bit about the UC's -- I sent my AMCAS in the first week of June, and as of last week, I had received all of the UC secondaries. UCLA and UC-Davis came about 6 weeks after I submitted my AMCAS, and I just received UCSD, UCSF, and UCI all within the last 2 weeks, so hopefully that gives you an approximate timeline. They all give you about a month turn-around too. UCLA was a real pain -- if you want I can email you the questions sometime. But after I was finished with UCLA & Davis, it made all my others MUCH easier. UCSF is fabulous -- you check some boxes, sign your name and send in a check. I wish all secondaries were like that. I have no idea what kind of cuts they make, but they all definitely review the AMCAS first. Good luck.

Lilycat -
Your message was addressed to Shania, but would you be willing to share your information with me also (the secondary questions from the UCs)

Thanks in advance

No problem. It might be easier if you give me your email address, and which schools specifically you wanted the questions for.

Great. I have applied to all of the UCs, and I got my transmittal notification from AMCAS August 2nd, so I'm assuming I'll start to get some apps soon? You mentioned that UCLA and Davis were the biggest pains? If its too much of a hassle to mail me all the essay q's for all the schools, maybe at least the q's from those two? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Lilycat,
I need questions from USD, UCI, and UCLA if you can send them to [email protected]
Many many thanks.

Lilycat,

I don't know if you are still emailing secondary questions for the UCs, but if so, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me the questions for UCLA, UCD, UCSD, and Stanford. I took the MCAT in august, so I'm on "hold." Thanks.

My email is [email protected]

Lilycat,
I also don't know if you're still sending secondary essay questions. I like lizard took the August MCAT. Do you think you could send secondary questions from UCSF, UCLA, Stanford?

Would be greatly appreciated!

Can anyone confirm whether or not CWRU screens applicants? I received an application without MCAT scores so I wanted to be sure.

Thanks,
VAD

They do screen...but I also received one before they had my MCAT scores.

Hope this helps.

lilycat, Could you also send any questions you have for UC-Davis, UCI, UCSD, UCLA to [email protected]
