Hey all,
I was wondering for all of those who've applied for the CVS retail internship...have you been guaranteed an intern position yet?
I have gotten promises of an intern position, but I have not gotten a confirmation yet. The recruiter who is communicating with me takes forever to respond to my emails. At this point, I am starting to worry because mid-May is around the corner (which is when I plan to start).

What is your location? When did you interview? I received my offer letter 2 weeks after my interview. I think that they're supposed to let you know either way. I know someone else in my class who has also received their offer. I'm sorry to hear that your recruiter has been very unresponsive because my recruiter has been a joy to work with.

Damn, now you need to do a formal interview and get a letter to become an intern?!

Back in the day for CVS, to get an "intern" job all you had to do was walk in, go to the pharmacy and ask if you can work there--it was good to let them know you were a pharmacy student. Got hired right on the spot.

The future ain't what it used to be.

That was my thinking when I first started my search. Oh man, it is such a frustrating process these days with so much competition. Today you have to find out how to get a hold of the PDM, contact them, and pray that they are considerate enough to get back to you. I must have applied to every retail chain in my area and CVS was the only one where I was able to get an interview. Rite Aid was non-responsive, Walgreens either had no openings or was non-responsive, Walmart is "still deciding" how many interns they want to bring on and its almost May. Target required a 40 hour commitment every week and I couldn't do that because I have another job. I found one position locally at a hospital, interviewed for it, and then the hospital pulled the position.

I wish it were easier, I've applied to all the hospitals and retail chains, and even tried Cardinal for a nuke internship. I interviewed with a hospital and Rite Aid, but both declined me. Seems like if you don't already have extensive experience (from high school, undergrad, etc) they won't give you an internship. I've never worked chain retail, so that probably hurts me I guess. It sucks, because I figured that internships were supposed to be how you gained experience.

I'm not saying I have NO experience, I worked a summer at an independent after I graduated from high school, and then worked in a hospital the next summer. This past summer before I started P1, I applied all over again, and got nothing. I ended up making sandwiches in a mall for $7.15/hr so I could keep my apartment. I didn't forsee it being so hard to get an internship once I was already through a year of school; I would've taken out more student loans had I known.

Since I had been searching for this topic like crazy a few months ago:

I applied as a 1PD for several internships on career day. One was CVS. Apparently I was told it would be 40 hours a week, others were told 15-20, so well see how that goes. I was accepted into the internship program in March-ish. The internship starts next Monday. Have to do a piss test this week then next week they put us overnight in a hotel for a 2 day intro thingy. The going rate is $12/hr, as thats what Im being paid for my hospital PRN Internship as well.

Overall Im just looking to get my foot in the door and get some experience working retail. Our school is starting to do the whole brand generic testing so it will be to my benefit to just be around meds. I worked one day in the hospital pharmacy and with that knew the brand/generic for Januvia for an exam (how lucky is that?). I guess with any internship/job experience how much you get out of it depends on what you put in. Well see how this one goes. Im excited to get started, not to mention stop digging into savings to pay bills. Ha!

If you arent in school yet my suggestion is to hit the streets and try and get SOMETHING. If you dont, dont worry about it. I could land exactly zero jobs before school but a few months later in April they were kicking down the doors to get me for whatever reason (when it rains it pours, kind of thing). Dress well, bring a portfolio and and have the right attitude and you should be fine.

It sucks because theyre basically hiring you for 3 months, then youll be leaving. If you plan on working throughout school I would market yourself as such. Before I landed the CVS gig I was positioning myself to work 2-3 jobs PRN to get the $$$ home. You may have to do that. It actually nice that way because then once the summer is over you can pick the one you like the best to stay with.

I've tried in Buffalo (where my family lives) for the whole "only for 3 months" but I've also tried here in Rochester (where I live and go to school) for the "even during school" approach. I'd actually prefer to do year-round, but jeez, even one PRN job would be nice. How the hell did you manage to get 4?

He probably didn't walk up to the DOP and say "I am 12 and what is this?"

hey guys, yes i am also having a difficult time trying to find an internship position this summer. I tried the local hospitals they rejected me due to high competition. Walgreens ran out of positions. I didnt even apply to CVS, because we are on bad terms right now. But in any case, now that it is getting a little late, I think im just going to volunteer and enjoy the rest of my summer. Is it just me or are you guys finding it harder to get internship positions than it was last year? I spoke with one of my classmates and he said that he spoke with a CVS recruiter who said that they have really downsized their internship program this year due to the slow economy. In any case good luck to those of you who were fortunate enough to get positions this year I hope you learn a lot!

Maybe being an old fart helped in this case. I have no idea. All I can say is for every job I got, I applied to 4-5 throughout the school year. Keep trying!
