Hi guys,

I am a first time applicant to American dental schools and I was hoping someone can provide some insight into my case.

I understand the importance of applying early in the cycle, and as such I submitted my application around mid-June (including LORs). While many people did get interviews before December 1st, I still have not heard anything from the majority of schools I applied to. It's been six months. Has anyone been through something similar?

My stats:
- sGPA: 3.95 BCP: 4.00 oGPA: 3.93
- DAT: All sections above 21. I wrote the Canadian DAT, not the American one (no orgo or QR)
- I am a Canadian (therefore international and maybe considered OOS?)
- Volunteering: over 130 hours including international volunteer work
- Shadowing: Around 80 hours (I know some school recommend 100 hours, while others don't specify an amount)

Are international students interviewed after December 1st? Is something missing? If anyone has been through the same thing or has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

US residents are favored for US schools, so that may be why, even though with your statistics I'm surprised you haven't had an invitation offered to you. How about the Canadian schools you've applied to?

Sorry I forgot to mention I applied to private schools/"Canadian-friendly" ones, and not just the ones that favor only Americans. I should be hearing back from Canadian schools soon; the application cycle timing for Canadian schools is different from the American one.

Do you think there are other factors concerning the American schools?

I am a Canadian applicant with similar stats. I also applied early June and I have just begun receiving interview invites (2 invites since January).

Which schools did you apply to?

I applied to the more Canadian-friendly ones such as CWRU, BU and Pitt. I don't know if the following schools are also Canadian-friendly but I also applied to Buffalo, Touro, Temple, Louisville, Maryland and Marquette.

If you don't mind sharing, which schools sent you interviews? and on what date did you receive the invites? Thanks a lot.

Dude with your stats that's ridiculous.

I bet you will hear from one soon. Also, give them a call and ask for an update.

Is calling generally a good idea? I've heard so many stories of "they're so busy and don't appreciate calls; trust that they're looking over your application" stories.

I got interviews at BU and NYU so far. Heard from BU Jan 10 and NYU Jan 11. I applied to CWRU and Temple as well. I think you'll hear back soon. You shouldn't worry.

Maybe they've just waited to interview Canadians after Dec 1st. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. Thanks for the insight

It depends on the school. Most schools don't mind; see if they mentioned anything in their emails about not contacting them/asking for status updates. I don't think calling once after 6 months is unreasonable.

Idk about BU, but there was a Canadian at my NYU interview in early November. No idea when he applied though.

Hey, I'm Canadian as well. I applied much later in the cycle, but received 3 pre-dec interviews (NYU, Minnesota, Iowa) and 2 post dec interviews (Midwestern-Il, CWRU)

STATS:
My application was mailed out early July, but I retook the American DAT in August so my application was on hold until my DAT scores were verified.
sGPA: 3.59, oGPA: 3.62
PAT 23, QR 19, RC 21, TS 20, AA 20

Maybe the reason why you haven't been offered interviews is because 1) it's your first time applying? 2) your stats are hella good and 3) you didn't take the American DAT, which are signs that show that you wouldn't come to the U.S unless you absolutely had to. This is true unfortunately lol...
I hope you get accepted into a Canadian school! And if you are offered an interview at a U.S school, you've really got to sell yourself why you'd want to go to the U.S as opposed to Canada.

Is it actually true though? I know people who didn't write the American DAT and they got accepted. I never really thought of it as a sign that I wouldn't go there.

Its definitely not your stats, it must be your reference letters, essays, or ECs. Its also my first time applying to the US and I have a lower GPA, and applied in august but got 3 pre dec interviews and 2 acceptances. I think you're still fine, but maybe start looking over those parts of your application.

Yeah that's definitely a possibility. I'm fairly confident in my references (I've had good interactions with all of them and don't think I've done anything to upset them) and my essay, but if I don't get accepted then I'll definitely look over my non-stat aspects of my application.

Then again, I've read other threads (very few, though) where people have waited over 5 months before hearing anything. It's hard to pinpoint something when it seems as if there are many exceptions and possibilities and at least one person has been through each case.

I'm optimistic about this, though. I'll just have to wait more I guess.

Yea exactly, just be patient. Better yet, if you're confident you'll get Canadian interviews, start preparing for those. You already did all you can for the US cycle, just go buck for the Canadian one so you don't have to worry about this anymore.

Sorry just to clarify, I meant it's true that us Canadians wouldn't choose to go to the U.S unless it was the only option.
It's definitely possible to get in with only the Canadian DAT, but I chose to do both to not limit my options to those schools accepting Canadian DATs. There are "Canadian friendly" schools which don't accept Canadian DATs as well.

Oh that makes sense now. I guess it depends on the applicant; there are different factors to consider between going to school here vs. in the States (mainly quality of education and costs, imo). When I said "Canadian-friendly" I should clarify that I meant that those schools accept the Canadian DAT, and not "those schools accept Canadians who have written the American DAT".

Just saying.. the quality of education in both countries is probably the same lol the only thing is the cost

From what I hear US schools offer a better education and more clinical training, they're just 2-3x more expensive

Yeah I was gonna say if anything and more likely so anyways, US training would be better. Didn't wanna put the patriotic impression on, but I know my fellow Americans agree lol
