Hi everyone!

I'm currently a freshman at university who is interested in pediatric psychiatry. I have been looking into Mt Sinai's FlexMed program because I want to be able to participate extracurriculars with my other interest, social entrepreneurship in particular. After reading some threads about FlexMed, I noticed that a lot of people commented that if you have the scores to get into FlexMed you probably would be a competitive applicant for medical school anyway. Now, here is where I need some clarification and guidance... If I were to participate in social entrepreneurship activities, how would I should a commitment to medicine (that would help me get into med school)? Wouldn't I need to have some research experience, clinical work, as well as doing my social entrepreneurship activities?

Thanks.

When you say social entrepreneurship -- Do you mean initiating programs or projects to improve society or specific segments of it? If so, and your programs are altruistic (sounds like most would be), then I'm not seeing the conflict...

Hi DoktorMom,

There isn't a conflict besides time. Basically, I'm wondering: If I am involved in social entrepreneurship and not so much with research and medical related activities, will that hurt me?

If medicine is your only passion, you will burn out HARD down the road... especially if you're only in the premed stage. Plus you'll be a boring applicant.

If you have passion don't worry about how it will look, just go do it. The rest of the stuff will work itself out if you have the stats.
