HBV + reverse transcriptase + fun

Hey fellow sufferers!


I know these posts are the least fun to look at and even less fun to bother answer but I was hoping you could help 🙂

Why in the hell does HBV need a damn reverse transcriptase if it's already a fricken DNA virus--- i know something to do with needing an RNA intermediate for replication but that's all i got.

in undergrad neuro-phys, a student in the class asked "so where does the horizontal cell come from" .. the profs answer to his question will answer yours "god put it there" lol

This is because HBV has one of the most ******ed life cycles outside of the parasitic worms and flukes.

Hang on tight:

1. So the HBV genome is DNA right? So what happens is it undergoes processing to form a loop of DNA that goes into the nucleus.
2. From there it makes a couple of mRNA transcripts, including a LONG mRNA transcript that is actually longer than the genome (since it goes around the circle more than once).
3. This LONG mRNA and a couple of other transcripts exit the nucleus to the cytoplasm where it expresses the HBV proteins including the reverse transcriptase.
4. The reverse transcriptase acts on the LONG mRNA that just created it to make the HBV DNA genome from the RNA in the ER/Golgi.
5. This newly formed DNA gets packaged into the virus and it lives happily ever after.
6. ??
7. Profit!
