A/c to Uworld, HBV transmission from mother to fetus typically occurs during the passage of fetus through the birth canal, less commonly than transplacental tranmission. I understand how transplacental transmission occurs..i mean what's not to understand, the virus goes via the placenta. But i dont understand the mechanism/concept of acquiring the infection via the birth canal. Can anyone explain this?

Vaginal secretions contain the virus and the fetus spends a long time in the birth canal after rupture of the membranes----> Prolonged exposure.
