any tips or resources you've found helpful in studying the head and neck. Anything would be useful---I'm hanging on a limb here!

I love my chung- I am never without it.

He also is the greatest anatomy teacher in the world (go Sooners, yes he is my teacher). The man will walk over to your body, look you in the eye while he tells you about some random tiny branch of some artery/nerve whatever, and simultaneously pull it out, like magic. He is the best....and his tips for studying head and neck include lots of prayer. Ha!

Hey lady... just finished the head and neck... OMG! I feel you pain!

I'm not sure how you're doing it at NJ, but we only had two weeks of head and neck with major autonomics (I don't want to see the Trigeminal Nerve ever, EVER again!), and basically drawing was very, very helpful. As always, the classic case of repetition, any way possible, is the best way to get through. Read your notes as often as possible, and if you have to know pathways, break out the colored pencils and start drawing!

It's just like most other things, learn the nerves fowards and backwards, and the rest will follow.

thanks for the support guys.
what's up HT? I'm drawing out the cervical plexus and using netter's flashcards. It's helping somewhat. guess there's no other round about way of absorbing this info. I just learned a new mnemonic for the cranial nerves. Oh, Oh, Oh, To Touch And Feel A Girl's V----a, Ah Heaven!

🙂

anyone have any other's for different parts of the head and neck?

Taking my head and neck test tomorrow :-D

It's not that bad. The radiology section scares me though. They like putting up scans from weird angles and areas.

Moore blue boxes. I found Chung's section on Head and Neck though to be somewhat weak.

Did someone say mnemonic? 😀

I have one more for you lakun - it will help you remember the innervation of the cranial nerves, whether sensory, motor, or both. It goes in order from CNI to CNXII.

Some Say Marry Money, But My Brother Says Bigger Breasts Matter More

If you can figure something out that's more gender neutral, mad props to you. 😉 For now, this should be very helpful with remembering that CNs I, II, & VIII are sensory, CNs III, IV, VI, XI & XII are motor and CNs V, VII, IX, & X are both sensory and motor. 🙂

I had lots of mnemonics for this stuff but it's been 2 years so a lot of them are fading. Here's one I remember

Branches of the external carotid in the order they branch off:
See The Ancient Pharoh Look For Old Posts And Signs To Mecca
Superior Thyroid, Ascending Pharyngeal, Lingual, Facial, Occipital, Posterior Auricular, Superficial Temporal, Maxillary

I'll try to post up some more if I think of them.

A more gender neutral version is
Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter Most 😉

Got another:

Ten Zebras Bit My Cervix

For the branches of the Facial nerve (Superior to inferior)

Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular, Cervical

What's good about it being gender neutral?

I dunno..I frankly don't care. The more "politically incorrect" a mnemonic is the better I remember it. But someone asked for a more gender neutral version so I volunteerd one I knew.

I like this version better:

Two Zebras Bit My Crotch

it has a more palatable mental image

But then I always forgot whether the C stood for Cervical or Clavicular ... don't ask me why but I always forgot this. So the Cervix thing worked better for me.

After I heard this I knew I'd never forget what the chorda tympani n. (branch of CN VII) does:

What do the chorda tympani and the vagina have in common?

They both supply taste to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.

My apologies for the vulgarity, but it's funny!
