My husband is currently in medical school and the government has changed their policy allowing him to put us on the med school health plan and receive extra student loans to cover that cost. We are looking into alternatives for myself and my son as his school requires him to be under their policy or a better one, and obviously if we found it ourselves for him, it would cost more.

My question is, does anyone have any recommendations? I am healthy, but obviously need to go to the doctor for minor things like when I get sick and possibly have strep throat and need antibiotics, or the like. Thanks in advance.

The health insurance plans that are available are state dependent, so most of us won't have any direct experience. If you can't afford health care for yourself and your son, you might look into Medicaid or some other state sponsored program. SCHIP should cover your son.

While you should clearly have health insurance, it isn't for minor doctor visits. The out of pocket expenses for minor illnesses are way less than what the premiums cost for even bargain basement insurance. The biggest reason for young women to carry insurance is pregnancy, as it will cost thousands of dollars, is considered a preexisting condition, and is exceedingly common.

i used ehealthinsurance.com to find an individual plan. i personally went for something with a flat co-pay ($30) for preventive visits and respectable catastrophic coverage (which is what health insurance is really for). minor stuff can be taken care of at a free or low-income clinic, but the big unexpected stuff can bankrupt you.
