Hey there,
I was just wondering if anyone can give me some general information on being a healthcare administrator and how to get there. To get the discussion started....
1. What is/was your major for your undergrad?
2. Which major would you recommend for aspiring admins, or do you see in other admins?
3. Do you enjoy being a hospital admin? What is a 'typical' day like?
4. There all a lot of areas you can be an admin in, what's your favorite or preferred?
5. Any other advice?
6. Anything else you would like to say!

Thanks!

1. First, go to college. Then go see the career center. Also, go meet some hospital admins...
2. Depends... some are MBAs, some MDs, some MA/MS in Healthcare Admin, some....
3. Why are you asking this in pre-allo...?
4. Umm... See #3?
5. Yeah... go to college.
6. Do well in college.

1. I've met people from many different undergraduate backgrounds, including people with degrees in nursing, psychology, sociology, general business, finance, accounting, management information systems, etc. Truth is, it doesn't really matter, there is no "fixed path" to "making it" in the healthcare administration field. What really matters is who you know and how well you network.
2. In my opinion, a finance/accounting undergrad + MHA/MBA would probably be the best path use to you if you are aiming to eventually become a CEO. COO- perhaps undergrad in nursing/healthcare administration + MHA/MBA or masters in operations management. CFO, perhaps undergrad in healthcare administration + MBA with a concentration in finance. CMO of course MD/MHA or MD/MBA. CNO, undergrad in nursing + MHA. But again, there is no single set path to anything in the healthcare administration field, and again, your network and abilities are what really matter.
3. Try joining your local chapter of ACHE/HFMA/MGMA. It might be the best way to get in touch with the healthcare executives in your area. They might be in a better position to answer the rest of your questions.

Healthcare administration is the business side of medicine. Doctors work with the patients.

1: You can get a B.S. degree in business, finance/accounting, business administration, or any other similar degree. If you get a B.S. degree in healthcare administration, you could run a nursing home or get a manager job at a hospital or clinic. If your goal is to work as an executive at a hospital or clinic, you will want to get the masters degree in healthcare administration and get experience so you can apply for the bigger jobs.

2: See number 1.

3: Ask to meet a hospital administrator for a few minutes.

5: The more business and executive experience you have the better off you will be.

Send me a private message and I will get you connected with a person that can help lead you int he right direction.
