Hi All, I am a freshman in college in cold cold Wisconsin and a new member. Wahoo! Anyway, I was wondering If they even discriminate against people with hearing aids. Will that effect my chances of going into residency somewhere or what? I plan on going into surgery, any input would be much appreciated.

I don't know for a fact, but I think you'd be fine as long as your hearing aid doesn't inhibit your ability to do your job.

I wouldn't worry about it. 🙂

Most schools have a technical skills requirement such that you need to be able to operate at a 'normal' level with or without reasonable accommodations. As far as hearing goes, this means that you must be able to auscultate effectively. If your hearing aids correct your hearing completely, it should be no problem at all. If you still have some residual hearing loss, then I don't know and you'll need to wait for someone more knowledgeable than I.

Anyway, I'm from MN so I feel ya on the cold weather. Hope you enjoy your freshman year!

If he really has trouble auscultating, they making those digital stethoscopes (good ones too) these days which amplify the sound a lot, and that should compensate.

I personally don't see a hearing aid being an issue. Though I'm no dean or no adcom member.

Contact a few medical schools by snail mail or email to Admissions, you'll get an authoritative answer. You may not hear back immediately, most are busy doing other things right now.

I've heard of people who wear a hearing aid getting through med school. Don't know where I've heard it from though. Just that I've heard it.
