Anyone elese have a genetics lab where you have to check your flies every 10 hours? Going out to the bio building at 12 or 4 am blows.

Yeah, i'm in the same predicament, except i stopped checking on the flies....obviously the whole class is going to make up their lab data anyways.

If you put them at 18deg C o/night, then you can collect the virgins 16 hours later. Not More than 16 hours, but if you clear the vials at six p.m., then by 10 a.m. the next day you can be certain that the virgins haven't mated.

Not at my school it's not. I know pre-meds with wives and children, and getting up at 4am to check on fruit flies (unless it's voluntary) = horse jizz.

Sooooo, 18C ~65F. One could *theoretically bring your vials home with you and put them in something that's about this temperature. Or, you could just bring them home and do the clearing at home.

Just a thought.

They had a computer program called "Fly Colony" that we used in lab. Made things a whole lot easier than having to use real flies.

This is hilarious!!!! It's only taken 4 YEARS for me to hear about ppl with similar horrible experiences with fly labs in genetics!!! I thought my instructor was nutso when he suggested we check for virgin flies at 4 in the morning....small campus = bldg never open past 5. He honestly thought our lazy security personell would be glad to let us sohpomores into an emty bldg at those wee hrs of the morning. Also got stuck with a lab partner (with a 2 y/o daughter)who commuted from an hr away every day and thought I should be the one to do all the monitoring since I lived on campus. Needless to say, that lab ended up being a complete waste!! None of our crosses worked (most of the class had similar results as mine) and I ended up getting the lowest passing grade available....a frickin C-!!!!!!!!!!!! That lab was my worst enemy and still has the ability to bring up my lunch after all these years. @#%#$%@$%^ FLIES!!!!
