First of all I'd like to say what's up to everyone on this forum. I live in Southern California and attend Cypress College. I am a freshman and I plan on completing 60 transferable units by the end of my sophomore year so I can transfer to a university. I talked to a counsellor at my school and he suggested that I major in Communications because it is a light major that frees up my time to take the prerequisite classes for the pharmacy school I plan to eventually apply to. Is this a good idea?

Also would obtaining a Pharmacy Tech License and Certification help my chances of getting into pharmacy school? I was in a free Pharmacy Tech Program but decided to focus all my time on transferring.

Do you enjoy the classes required for a Communications major?

Being a pharm tech before school helps with some of the stuff you learn as a student, but people get accepted without any pharmacy work experience and catch up on how to work while on rotations.

I'm not exactly sure how to look up the major courses for a specific university.. so if someone could help me with that, that would be great. But I think I would enjoy the classes for Communications more than say, classes for Biology.

Check this tool out:
https://www.transfer.org/uselect/

It has several CA universities, and it looks like it has Cypress College too. It'll tell you which classes you took fit which requisites at the university. 🙂

Thanks for the link! It seems to be not working correctly though. Is it similar to assist.org? But actually, I am trying to find out what classes are in a major at a specific university, not what pre-reqs I need to complete before I go there.

Yes, looks like assist.org will provide similar information. (It looks like it's CA-specific - I'm in AZ, so I'd never seen assist.org before.)

About uselect - Looks like I failed to read closely. It pulls Cypress College up, but says it does not participate. assist.org is probably your best bet, besides looking at the university's websites directly.

But if you choose biology a lot of the required classes will fill your prereqs. Also majoring in science may better prepare you for pharm school. If you find you don't like taking science courses during undergrad than pharm school may not be a good choice.

If, however, you know pharm school is right for you and really want to study communication... do it up 👍!

I would recommend science because it would almost certainly better prepare you. It isn't necessary though so when all is said and done, just do what you really want.

hi how are . this is good forum for me regarding information and learning new things as well

This is debatable, especially if you're recommending a Biology major. I have heard people say they are glad they had a Chemistry major (but it takes a certain type of folk to do that), but never Biology. I've heard higher accolades for Psychology. I could even see how a potential employer might look positively on a communications major with the proper spin (at least, I can think of how I'd pimp it in an interview & on my resume).

The most compelling reason I've heard for choosing a science major over anything else - at some schools, the school prioritizes entry into popular science classes for science majors, which can make it more difficult to get a seat.

There is a thread somewhere where everyone listed their undergrad majors. The point, which bw6 also makes, is that you should pick something you enjoy doing for 4 years. The people responding to that thread included history, psych, and other non-science majors in higher numbers than you'd otherwise think.

Okay well I have now finalized the decision in my mind that I want pharmacy to be my career. Here are my reasons:

1. I want to help people (but not touch them)
2. I think drugs are fascinating
3. I like the salary
4. I want a job that has at least somewhat prestige

I understand that the job market may be less than spectacular by the time I'm done with pharmacy school (in at least 7 years), but I know that if I work hard I'll be able to find work somewhere. The only thing stopping me is me! 😀

dudeee never go to a pharmacy tech program/schools. Those things are a waste of money. Become a pharmacy clerk instead, you'll learn faster that way.

The program is free. I talked to this guy who went to American Career College or one of those types of schools and paid thousands!
