i think i most definitely fit the definition of non-trad 🙂...in fact most days i think i am the epitome of it...lol
here is the cliff notes version of my story:
i graduated high school in '92, went to junior college was interested in genetic counseling. as i finished jr college was looking for a trad college to finish my undergrad at and could not find one with the major genetic counseling. ended up being talked into by various fmaily members into pursuing something in writing/journalism due to the fact that i seemed to have a natural talent for it. somehow jouralism evolved into radio-tv sportscasting and off i went. however i had no desire to learn what i was learning and sturggled with classes.....ended up having three semesters of mostly failing grades which has since resulted in a lower side undergrad cum gpa. while on academic suspension figured out genetic counseling was a masters program and i needed to major in bio. ended up taking a year off to be with my grandma who was dying of lung cancer and went back to jr college to get some of the prereqs out of the way. i ended up going to a local campus of a state college to finish my undergrad. during my time there i shadowed a genetic counselor and figured out very quickly it was not what i had in mind. after discussions with both the people i had shadowed and my advisor it became clear that my path was becoming a physician. i balked at this due to the family consideration (had two children at that point) and spent the next school year investigatinge very other option out there to see if i could get the things i wnated ina career elsewhere. the answer ended up being a big fat resounding NO...so i waved the white flag and took the mcat in april 2004. i graduated in may 2004. i applied via amcas in summer 2004 to east coast schools (my dh was transferred from chicago to nyc for job reasons). needless to say...did not get in. while talking to admissions reps out there though i discovered that my undergrad gow and mcat were the problem. it was recommended to me that i pursue a graduate degree as that would go a long way to proving that i could succeed at med school since med school classes are equiv to grad school classes. so off to investigate programs. at that time dh was also looking to come back here to chicago so i applied to the two smp here (franklin and loyola). ended up getting into the smp at franklin three days before orientation was slated to begin. went thru the program last year and ended up missing the gpa cutoff to continue by one question on my biochem final...AGGGHHH! so now i am back to square one. i have talked to numerous programs who have told me the same thing i need to raise my mcat and i need to raise my grad gpa. so this year i am applying with acomas to ccom and taking classes at niu. i am also taking the kaplan prep class and plan to sit for the august mcat (although that may change).
here are my current stats:
undergrad cum gpa : 3.2 (not too bad considering the three semesters of failing grades 🙂 )
undergrad science gpa: 3.75 (you'd think they notice this rather large discrepancy and be curious about it...but apparently not)
grad gpa: 2.88
mcat: 26R (9p,9v,8b)

so that is my story....i look forward to getting to know you all>
here is hoping we ALL get in this year 😀
