I just wanted to introduce myself to this board. I'm so glad I found it! I've gleaned so much information already (especially in the FAQs thread).

Hi. My name is Iona. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom raising a 2 year old boy. I graduated from UC Davis in Mach of 2003 with a BS in Biological Sciences and decided to pursue a career in Pharmacy. I still have a couple prerequsite courses that I still need to take as well as (hopefully) finding a pharmacy job to gain a bit of experience before I endure the long and tedious task of applying to professional schools. I know it'll be a long and bumpy road, but I'm glad there's a community such as this that I can turn to for advice. I'm also looking forward to meeting some of you - future classmates and colleagues.

Welcome to the boards. Best of luck in your classes and your job search!

Hi Iona! Welcome to SDN. 🙂

Hello Iona! I too am a proud mother of a very active 2 year old boy. Welcome to SDN. This forum is great! Everything you always wanted to know and more about pharmacy school and the profession is located here.

My journey to pharmacy school has really just started. I have about 6 more prereq's to complete and hope to apply next year to one or two 3 year programs.

There are a couple of other parents on the board and they have really helped me out with advice on balancing family and school.

Susan🙂

I'm a proud parent of a 2 month old baby girl (Agape). SDN Pre-pharm parents unite! (Corny, but had to say it) 😀

Welcome! I am not a mother but am on the older side of applicants. Im almost 26 and hoping to get in for Fall 2005. I still struggle however with the prospect of having to wait for 4 years to start a family. I wonder if it would be hard to have a kid while in school????

This site is so great as everyone on it has been super helpful! I owe my sanity to SDN!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! 🙂

Smilescali, looks like we're in the same boat. I'm planning to apply next year also, although I think I will be going with a more shotgun-type approach. I'm thinking about applying for ~9 schools - all of the cali ones, Southern Nevada and maybe HICP (I know, I know... I will see if they get their accreditation first). Right now, I still have to take microbiology, physiology, speech and economics 😕 (never had to take it for my BS) for my prereq's.

...and to all you guys with kids - wow! It's great to know I have someone to relate to. From seeing the average age of students (24), I thought I would be alone on this one. I think only a parent can know how stressful it is to have to study, change diapers, prepare meals and still be a nurturing mother (or father). Rock on guys!

Tai, I feel you. I was surprised at the age statistics for Pharm school. If everything goes to plan, I will be attending school when I am 26. I'll be the dinosaur of the class!

I wonder if it would be hard to have a kid while in school????

Yes it is!!! At least in my situation it was. Imagine all the stresses involved in being pregnant (morning sickness, emotional rollercoasters, hormones ect.). On top of that, add studying, midterms, finals... walking... ahemmm... waddling around school to get around. It's hard. 2 weeks before finals in my senior year of undergrad school, I was hospitalized. Pre-term labor. I missed my finals. I got an incomplete in one class. My graduation was denied. My son was born premature (3 lbs. 9 oz.). 🙁

...fast forward to today. My son is well and has been developing normally for his age. I also convinced my professor to give me my standing grade at the time I was hospitalized. I got my diploma. Everything turned out OK, but if it were to happen again, I would have laid off school for a while and relaxed.

Thanks ICA for the advice! Good to hear there are some solid pple around like you! =) Im sure u will do awesome in school!

hi! i'm a proud aggie as well! welcome to the forum! 🙂

I have decided I am going to apply only to Southern Nevada next year because I do not have a BS and am going for the long shot. I have tons of units (probably enough to have my 4 year degree), but I switched my major from Political Science to Biology. If I don't get into Nevada next year then I will branch out and apply to Cali schools and again Nevada (it is my first choice). My son will be older and hopefully in some type of school before I start pharmacy school.

The challenge with being a parent for me is that I can only take 1 or 2 classes a semester while my son is young and I feel like I will never be ready to apply to pharmacy school. I guess I will be the oldest dinosaur because I am 28 now and probably will be 30 before I get in. Oh well, experience is knowledge.

Congrats! JD USD on your baby girl! Are you sleeping at all? 🙂

I feel exactly the same way. If I want to take that "extra" Bio class, I have to figure out "who will watch the baby?" 😳 It can get frustrating at times, but I keep my goals in perspective in order to stay motivated.

If I get accepted and decide to attend Southern Nevada, I will have to bring my family along with me. Then I have to worry about enrolling my son in the Nevada School District as a CA resident or maybe, private school (= more $$$). :scared: Aghhhhhhh. /talking to self "One step at a time!"

Our daughter sleeps most of the day and night!! If she's not eating, spitting up, or getting changed, she's 😴

My wife and I alternate w/ classes (when I'm in class she's w/ baby and vice versa). I couldn't imagine being a single parent. To all you that are I give you my most admiration! I plan on putting her in private school once I'm out of pharmacay school (when it's affordable!) but will enroll her into public school until i'm out. At that age, not much difference in cutting, coloring, and learning the ABCs can be made to make me want to enroll her into priv. school immediately.

Good luck all you SDN Parents!

fellow aggie here too! go aggies! =D

Really though, 26 isn't even near the oldest of applicants.

Welcome to the forum, Iona! 🙂

Don't worry about being the oldest...I'll be 29 when I start pharmacy school next year and my mom was 31 when she started pharmacy school. She wasn't the oldest in her class, either. She also had two kids (my sister was nine and I was eleven). I won't say it was easy for her, but she survived.

Oh, I'm not worried at all. I just always laugh when some folks fret because they will begin pharmacy school at 25 or so. I'm 25 now and in the process of applying, so it's no big deal to me. I gave up the concept of a timed life plan years ago. 🙂
