Just writing to say "hi." I joined SDN today and am looking forward to "talking" to all of you about pre-vet things. 🙂

I'm a non-traditional adult student (I'm 26 y/o) in WI and just returned to start taking pre-reqs. I have been working as a Child Protective Services social worker for 4 years and finished my Master's in Social Work last August. I am finally pursuing my real dream of becoming a vet after realizing that I am just not satisfied with social work.

Any other potential class of 2014 people out there?? Gosh that sounds like a long way away. Plus, 2014 is of course contingent on getting in the first time!! 😱

Hi and welcome! Can't say I'm planning to be applying for 2014 (it would be my third time applying if I did), but you never know! Until it's time for you to experience that lovely, wondrous journey that is the application process, you can sit back and make fun of those of us who are going through it now! 😀 Have you looked into what schools you like yet or are you just concentrating at prereq's now?

Not a class of 2014 --- but I have been accepted into UW's class of 2012 -- HI! There aren't a lot of us WI people on here, but there are some others who have been accepted and I'm super excited to meet them all at the open house (sorry for the sidenote).

Anyhow, if you even have any questions, let me know! Or just want to chat, whatever. I'm still waiting on UMN, but leaning pretty heavily towards WI, so I'll be at your IS school and everything!

Okay, enough about me; welcome to the board! Glad to have you! And like I said, if you ever have any questions, give me a shout!

Hello! I'm just starting my pre-vet reqs too...in the fall, anyway. I started college as a French major, so I pretty much have no pre-reqs, except for a statistics class.
I'm counting on Class of 2016, which is even farther away...good luck though! 🙂

Thanks for the greetings everyone! 🙂

I am pretty much looking to stay in the Midwest, so I will be applying to UMN, WI, and IL. I haven't looked into Michigan that much, but I might.

I am heading down to Madison on March 20th for a tour and an advising appointment. Has anyone been working with Jo Oswald? She has responded quickly to my questions via email and has been helpful so far.

I'm in genetics this semester....and I really like it! Next year will be gen chem and physics, then will come O-chem, microbiology, and biochemistry the year after that.

Speaking of Biochemistry....listen to how much this sucks: the biochem classes at the universities around here (UW-Oshkosh & UW-Green Bay) only offer biochem in the fall, after O-chem II. The only university that offers the biochem that I need in the spring and can be taken concurrently with O-chem II is at Lawrence University....a private school. That one class alone is going to cost me $4,000!!!! Ahhh!! If I wait to take biochem at one of the public schools, it will delay my admission by one whole year. As some of you may know, those with degrees don't qualify for student loans, so all of these classes are coming out of my pocket. I decided not to do the second bachelor's thing because I didn't count on something like this coming up. Crazy! :scared:

Hi welcome to SDN Badger Girl! I will hopefully be in the class of 2014 too! I'm in Canada though and I don't think I'll be applying to any schools in the US (too lazy to take the GRE, plus tuition is way too expensive OOS). I could potentially finish the rest of my pre-reqs next semester and apply for class of 2013 but I think I'm going to hang around another year and get my degree because I'm really enjoying undergrad and don't want to leave quite yet!

And that's too bad about your biochem class. Hope everything works out for you in the end though!

This is why I always recommend that people who want to go back to get prerequisites declare as second degree seeking even if they don't plan to finish. Of course, I'm a bad example because I did that after my first BS (in Computer Science) with all intentions of doing the prereqs and getting out of there, then I decided I loved my major (Molecular Biology and Microbiology) and I was going to not only graduate with the second degree but do an honors thesis as well. Took it down to the wire last summer but I managed to finish before moving here. 🙄

Welcome to SDN Badger Girl and DachsieVet! Oh and Dachsie...my boyfriend went to Winter Park high school. 🙂

Live and learn, I guess! It's all part of the adventure. At least now I know what my tax money will be going toward in two years.

I actually worked with Jo Oswald before I applied, however, she doesn't work with current applicants (Lynn Maki does that) ... but she's very nice, and lets you know exactly what you need! Enjoy your tour and visit!

:welcome: I'm non-traditional too! I didn't decide I want to be a vet til I was 24. (BTW, that's the average age in my class now!) You might want to consider taking summer courses, if you haven't thought about it already. Usually they're easier to get into and that might help you avoid the $4000 course since you could knock your O-chem out in the summer. I took O-chem 1 in the summer, then O-chem 2 in the fall. It helped me get ahead as far as squeezing my pre-reqs into 2 years. If I hadn't applied to so many schools with so many diverse pre-reqs, I could've been class of 2010 (if I had gotten in the first time.) But I'm fine with being 31 when I graduate!

You might call up LU and talk to them about your situation, why you need the class etc. You can't get the loans, but when I was at Lawrence, they liked having older students from the community to give some diversity etc. Lawrence has a good endowment and gave me non-government money when I went there as an undergraduate, so if you make a good case, they might be able to help you out. Also employees of LU can go to classes for free, if you need a job.

Otherwise, I would try for online or community college, LU is awesome but not 4000 a class awesome.

Fargeese, LU class of '96!
