Help! 2nd-Semester Pre-DAT Sophomore Course Recommendations

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cell biology. There's not that much genetics on the exam and I don't know how relevant Chemical Biochemistry would be. Cell bio is definitely relevant. If you can fit in a physio course, that would be another helpful course if you haven't taken it yet. I took the DAT the end of my sophomore year and finished all the pre-dental pre-reqs but I had to study a lot of physio for the exam on my own.

I had to take trigonometry for a physics pre req the semester before I took the DAT and it was really useful for the QR section

I agree with the poster above. The chemistry version doesn't seem to be too relevant. I took biochemistry I & II at my school and it helped me tremendously for my DAT (It was more biology than chemistry). I'm not sure how it works at your school, but I was waitlisted too and I simply got permission to enroll in the class by making up a BS excuse. I took cell bio as well and it wasn't at all relevant. The cell bio we learned was way too detailed and the biology on the DAT is very basic.
Try your best to get into Biochem> Chemistry version > cell bio (should cover basic genetics) > genetics

For me, Human Physiology was VERY helpful. A hint of human anatomy, steroids, hormones, renal (super important on the DATs IMO) which also will give insight on vasodilation stuff, etc - basically just sooo much important information all in one class!

Genetics might also be helpful, just because studying it for the first time for the DATs will be boring, stuff you've seen since elementary repeated over and over again - but not as important as HPHYS.

Currently taking Cell Physiology aka the BIO BIOCHEM (not CHEM BIOCHEM) and I would say this class would barely be helpful for the DATs because it's too in depth, but it may be just my school's biochem.

Just saying, my DAT was heavy in genetics...

I would say genetics. then cell. i mean, you really should have a good foundation before you take the exam.. I'd advise reading Cliff's AP Bio and Cliff's Anatomy and Physiology, they're awesome and really helped me catch up. I'd recommend them 100%.

I ended up with a 20 in bio by doing these things.

Good Luck!

animal phys/human phys

or
cell bio

will be helpful for bio sections.

But, every knowledge gap you have on DAT can pretty me covered with Cliffs AP or DAT destroyer (or even feralis, even though I couldn't finish reading because it was too dry)

Wow!

Thank you so much everyone- I really appreciate all of this feedback. A+P was a big concern of mine but I'll use Cliffs A+P to cover that well (school not offering it this coming semester).

So basically what I am taking away from this is that these classes (cell bio, biochem, genetics) will provide an ADVANTAGE for the DAT, but they are not NECESSARY to do well, right? I'll study Cliffs and Destroyer thoroughly.

In this case, I think I'll be going with either Cell Bio (elective in my major) or Genetics (it's a requirement for my major and a prereq for upper levels, so might as well get that out of the way early).

Thank you again, everyone! Really appreciate all of your feedback.

you are right, if you take those classes, it will help you because you will already know those material prior to preparing for the DAT, but even if you haven't, you can still learn them by using prep materials out there, so either way you won't be affected significantly by your decision.

good luck!
