If you honestly do not want to be a physician, I would recommend against pursuing the field. If you somehow do manage to get accepted to medical school (hard enough as it is), your head will probably explode sometime during the first year. Someone that hasn't experienced it cannot understand how hard med school is. "Having no life" does not begin to describe the work you will have to put in and the stress you will be placed under. If you do not have a deep-seeded desire pulling you through, you will lose it.

Either way, high school is a bit premature to be making long term career decisions. For now, focus on graduating and getting into college. Once in college, figure out what you want to do from there. You don't need to decide on medicine now, you definitely don't need to be deciding on a specialty now. Go ahead and take some time to enjoy being in high school.
so let it explode, one year isn't long. and there's no way my head can explode. my decision in this field is final. i mean, during second period i was searching on the internet and do you know how much radiologist make in one year?? that could take my family out of depth, send my siblings and cousins to college, my parents can finally retire, buy my mom and my grandma a new car and rebuild my church.

and i need encouragement, "If you somehow do manage to get accepted to medical school (hard enough as it is)", y'all always focus on negatives. I WILL make it into medical school, and I WILL sleep a good 6-7 hrs EVERY NIGHT. don't try to scare me. isn't all the classes the same anyways. Chem, bio, physiology, blah blah blah; its all the same crap that y'all learn every year.

and do you have to go to med school to become a doctor or is that an option?? and is there any in Texas?? Houston??

Just FYI, med school's 4 years.

Residency is another 3-6

Fellowship (like a second residency for sub specialties) is another 1-3 years.

So it's not just that 1 year you have to make it through. But, I guess we won't focus on the negatives... Good luck!

I'm going to get back to studying my chem, bio, etc.

If you present the same sentiments toward medicine once you hit the interview, well... let's just say I think you'd have no choice but to go back into some form of business. I don't know what you mean when you say business is risky. Anything involves risk. Granted, in the healthcare field you're job security is pretty solid, but if you hate what you do then you'll lead a pretty miserable life. I'm not sure how old you are, so if you are in your teens why couldn't you go into business, or any such field. If that is what you truly want to do then pursue it. It is really stupid to waste your time and effort working toward a career that you'll ultimately despise.

It sounds to me like you need to do some soul searching and attempt to evaluate what you want in life and where you should be headed in terms of calling, etc. If you do continue down the path of medicine any number of challenges (gpa, mcat, med school should you get that far) will quickly sink whatever residual desire you had for the field.

Yeah, we have 1 or 2, but all the awesome Texans choose to go to Stewart.
http://www.stewartmed.org/

Based on your posts, I think you'd be a great personality fit for the school. You're definitely more than qualified, good luck! :luck:

i don't know what you mean by troll but i was planning on pursuing business but i changed my mind.

Um, yeah, changing your mind in high school does not mean you have no choice in going back. Expect to change your mind many more times before you graduate from college. I always wanted to be a doctor when I was younger, but during high school and college I went through several identity crises and considered the following careers with various degrees of seriousness (not an ordered or complete list):

Rabbi
weatherman
financial adviser
professional vocal percussionist
high school teacher
Biology professor/scientist
public relations representative
science writer
astronomer

If you don't mind me asking, what do you like?

Here is my advice. Go to college, study whatever the hell you want, graduate, then get a job. No matter what you study, you can decide to go into business. Hell, you can be a bio major and go into business. If you are smart enough, personable enough, and willing to take risks, you will be successful in whatever you choose. No matter what you choose, if you want to make money, you have to take risks.

If you're going into medicine to get your family out of "depth" then I would suggest another profession....Maybe Marine Biology?

Good luck doing all that you say you want to do with a $200k worth of student loans and the salary of a high school teacher for 3-7 years after medical school.

You're 16 years old. The biggest thing kids like you worry about is if john thinks that sally is cuter than you.

I like how you come here asking if doctors go straight into medical school from high school then asking if doctors have to go to medical school at all.

Fake! Entertaining though 🙂

another FOUR YEARS??? OMG...plus residency and fellowship?? church??

yeah, stay away from the negatives, isn't there a desperate need for physicians???

lol, i need to go back and study Pre Cal, test TOMORROW****

how do doctors go straight to medical schools if they aren't even doctors yet though??? YOU'RE MAKING ME CONFUSED!!!!! and are you saying, med school isn't a requirement or it is??

Study the ways of Beatrix Kiddo. Only then will you be a worthy adversary.

Not to derail things, but...

Yes, medical school is a requirement.

from where you are now:

2 more years of high school
4 years of college
4 years of medical school
3 years of residency (min)

Then you start making real money that you can use to pay off your loans.

Traditionally, you apply to medical school while in college. You don't need to worry about it yet.

Radiology residency is five years of training (actually one Internist year and four of rads) post med school.

I'm not even sure you can get a Masters in neuroscience.

I'm not even sure you can get a Masters in neuroscience.
um, yeah you can. at UT-dallas they have a fast track program were you can start your masters in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience during your senior year as a neuroscience major.

this is too good...
like BigRedder said, it was almost believable until the perm thing

Can you tell me why you like neuroscience? I'm legitimately curious.

are you making fun of me?? 🙁 is there something wrong with having an interest in the brain and mind?? i said before i wouldn't mind specializing in psychiatry or neuroradiology. maybe even neurology. i don't like hearts, feet, hands, lungs, cancer, bones, eyes, skin, blah. im in psychology AP and health science and that part of the area is the only area i understand and enjoy. next year i'll be taking human anatomy and physiology and i can't wait to go more in dept in the brain instead of just concentrating on the mind. i mean, i do believe the mind and brain are one**

I seriously can not believe this thread has reached two pages...
I've lost complete respect for the SDN community.

I'm not making fun of you at all, I majored in neurobiology and currently do fMRI research. I just wanted to know what it is you find interesting about the the brain.

can someone help me??
all my life i wanted to have a career in business but business is too risky so i switched to healthcare. honestly, this field has no interest to me. i don't like hospitals, blood or sick ppl. but i know i will be guarantee a job unlike in business. ever heard of an unemployed nurse????
anyways, i just need answers because y'all make no sense to me.
what is residency, DO, oos, BE/BC, match, rankings(??)? and what exactly is Med School?? do you go to college than Med School or after high school than Med School? is there any med schools in Texas because i hate snow and i don't want to be paying $1000+ a month up north for rent.
also is radiology a good field to go into?? i hear all you do is study pictures and videos with little patient contact. i don't want them giving me AIDS or something.

short history***
i originally wanted to be a nueropsychiatrist but the pay inequality is ridiculous. so i switched to neurology but then i grew a fancy for neurosurgery but my bf says thats 'brain surgery', and im like, NEVER MIND!!! im smart but not that smart. so i guess neuroradiology could be the best for me. (anything dealing with the brain, spine, neck or mind is ok for me). everyone i know who wants to go into the medical field wants to be a dentist or dermatologists. yeah, i don't want to touch ppls face or teeth, YUCK!!!

you're .. not .. serious

You had respect for the cluster-f that is the pre-allo forum?

Fail.

Also, OP, neurosurgeons being considered the smartest people on the planet is kind of a misperception. In fact, it's much more about hard work and physical approaches, without a whole lot of differential thought at all. I'd bet that, on average, infectious disease, nephrologists, and immunologists are a good deal smarter.

And your post will help this thread reach three pages. 😀

did someone mention a perm? no one other than my grandmother gets perms. my realization: the op is not a female.

i may have worded this wrong. she wants to be surgeon in reconstruction, but she's younger than me. my sisters shadows a surgeon and nurse assistants at .Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Systems once every month. she likes that type of environment.

Damn Kinetic, you gettin' creative!

 This is all so funny! If this is fake... who has time to create a fake person!? Shouldn't you be studying for the MCAT or biochem or something!? 😛

 Yeah, I thought that too. Perms are a very 1950's type of thing. Teenage girls these days only care about the Chi hair straighteners...duh. Dead giveaway, OP!

it makes you think... maybe making up a fake persona is just that much fun? :hardy:

How have you not been banned yet?😕 I admire your stamina.

That's actually Cell.

😎

Cripes. How is this thread still here?

I must say, I have great admiration for the OP's trolling abilities. He/she started this idiotic thread, and actually hoodwinked people into responding, without getting banned themselves. If I ever start trolling, this will be my example

This thread is not a testimony to the trolling abilities of the OP but to the lack of troll detection nous amongst SDN. I'm disappointed in you all.

 Yeah, I thought that too. Perms are a very 1950's type of thing. Teenage girls these days only care about the Chi hair straighteners...duh. Dead giveaway, OP!
white people....Chi or Con-Air can only do so much for blacks hair. i may be mixed but i still need a perm to straighten it and make it shine. i don't want to have to wear weave.

When I was in high school, I took a look at SDN and realized it was not for my kind... SDN was where the big kids played. So I never came back and completely forgot about it until hearing about it again late last year.

Nothing like this. If you think the OP is legit fine but perhaps you are the one forgetting what you were like at 16 yo

Constructive comments:

Perhaps you and me were not exactly like this, but I knew plenty of 16 year old's less mature than this.

When I was in high school, I took a look at SDN and realized it was not for my kind... SDN was where the big kids played. So I never came back and completely forgot about it until hearing about it again late last year.

Most (not all) wouldn't post because they wouldn't think they could hang with the big kids, they would make fun of you and pretend you weren't for real. (Sound familiar). Which is why I was not too quick to pass the op off for a troll.
