Sup pre-pharm peeps! I don't come on here much (i'm a pre-dent) but i have a question.

I know some places looking to hire pharmacy techs...seems like good pay and hours...on the job training...may learn some interesting stuff. Been looking for a second job you know.

Are any of you previously or current pharmacy techs? Can you tell me about it? And be honest too. If it was fun for you, you enjoyed it then be honest about it and tell your reasons. If you have some negative aspects about it, write that or whatever reason you don't like it and why.

I just want a glimpse of what it is like. Thanks!

I work as a Pharmacy Tech at a local Wal-mart. I find it exciting but that's probably because I want to be a Pharmacist. I found it difficult to get a position though. The only reason why I got the job was because I walked into the Pharmacy and told the Pharmacy Manager I was doing Pre-Pharmacy. Three months later I got a call because she kept a note I gave her. Everyone there is absolutely awesome. I have to get used to being the only male though.

The things I like about it are:

It's incredibly interesting.
You have 6 to 7 different areas to work (If you are tired of filling, you can go input or other responsibilities.)
It's fast paced and time goes by quickly.

The things I don't like are :

I'm trying to find the most comfortable shoes because my feet are killing me.

Good Luck!

I'm a CVS tech - just became an intern.
When you first start, you'll be a cashier (PSA) mainly, you'll learn how to use the computer shortcuts then you'll be trained for PSA then Technician. Once you are a tech you have different work stations depending on how experienced you are. there is drop off where you will be inputing the Rx; then there is pulling and fillings scripts.

I enjoy it bc its interesting learning about all these drugs and most of the time the patients are really nice.

like the above poster, it gets tiring standing all day, and honestly i don't think we get paid enough! I started at 8/hr. the worst part is dealing with insurance companies... you'll learn to fix insurance rejections with experience.

For the guy complaining about comfortable shoes. Forget the dress code and just wear sneakers. Your immediate supervisors are not going to care about it.

To the above poster, you're right. We do not get paid enough for what we do. Personally, I think Pharmacy Technician should become a unionized job, that way we can go on strikes for more money.

Yeah, go on strike for higher wages so you can pay it back in union dues. No thanks.

you guys are great. thanks for the input! couple more questions.

1) Two places have been hiring for a good while trying to find pharm tech. one is like an independent pharmacy i believe. the other one is CVS. Do you guys think there is any pros/cons ---difference between retail and independent pharmacy? In terms of work environment/treatment?

2)Also, what's the lowest you ever heard of being paid as a pharm tech? jusrt curious. Also, I know CVS is going to pay $8.00/hr...but the other place keeps saying "tbd" (to be discussed)...if pay rate comes up (if i got an intervirew🙄) ...i wouldn't know what to suggest? what is appropriate pay rate to ask for....in case they do ask?

thanks everyone!

I work for a small company and started at $10.00. They obviously want to pull away from the big chains. Amen to the sneakers! lol if I have to be on my feet for that many hours i'm not wearing a tie or dress shoes! I agree with Odublar on the pros and cons. Good list.

i think usually the chain stores pay less. some stores are actually unionized so there are unions out there. who you work with can really determine how much fun you have...
