Hello every one,

I'm planning to apply for pharmacy school this year for fall 2012 class. I earned a B.S. in Biochemistry in 2010. I took almost all pre-pharmacy prerequisites, but I still need "Public speaking" and "Microbiology".

Can I take them at community college? Do community colleges allow me to take them without choosing a major at their school?

Please give me advices to take these classes!!

Thank you

Yes you can take them at CC. For my CC you had to put something whether undecided or an actual major. Your CC might have a different policy.

I also have a question. Alot of premed students are very passionate about knowing Spanish because at least 26% of a Doctor's patients are spanish speakers. I am wondering if this is also essential for Pharmacists. The schools that I wish to apply to do not require you to take foreign languages (well except UT but they take the foreign you did in high school).

I am currently leaning towards clinical pharmacy, so I'm wondering if it can be useful for me, even though, I do not have as much contact with the patients as doctors.

If you learn Spanish, you'll be able to communicate much better with Spanish-speaking patients with poor English skills. In some places in the US, this is a huge number of people!

If you're interested, I think you should do it. Even with clinical, you seriously never know when your skills might be needed. Plus, speaking Spanish could open up entire new worlds of options for vacations in Spanish-speaking countries! 🙂

I live in Texas, so there are a lot of Spanish speaking people. You said "you seriously never know when your skills might be needed," to me that sounds like "spanish might be useful." If I learn it in the summer then I have to be able to keep on using it because if I don't I will forget it. If I learned it and don't remember it then it probably won't be of any use to me.

Those are all correct statements. Language is something you need to keep practicing.

You're probably not going to ever get paid more for speaking Spanish (not sure if this is what you were asking, but I figured I'd put it out there), but it will always be a very useful bonus, in work and life.

Languages are wonderful; learn as many as you're interested in learning. Knowing about other cultures and languages gives you a different view on the world.

lol, I wasn't thinking about money. I just want to make sure I can help as many patients I can without having to alienate people because they don't speak English very well.
Ok, thank you very much. I am definitely going to take Spanish in the summer and hopefully I won't forget what I learned......and I can help myself remember by watching Spanish dramas! hahaha yay! 😛

Learn as many languages as you can. It can't hurt. When I worked retail, I spoke Spanish everyday. Here in Tucson, we have a decent sized Russian population. There is a pharmacy they all go to because the pharmacist there speaks Russian.

I think it is weird that America doesn't incorporate more foreign language into public education like Europe does. It would be great if most Americans were, at the very least, bilingual.

Speaking of which, I need to start practicing my french since I will be in GENEVA in July. Word!

I'm taking Public Speaking at a CC. And in my CC, they allow you to take classes without declaring a major. Just go to an advisor at a CC.

P.S. sorry for stealing your post 😳

Ok since we are talking about re-takes, should I retake College Algebra that I took 1 year ago and got a C in. I'm almost confident I can get an A, the only reason I got a C is because I took it online and I forgot to turn in a couple of mandatory assignments online. (my fault obviously)

Is your algebra class a prereq. for pharmacy? That's a lower level math class, so pharmacy schools don't even care, really....well at least the pharmacy schools that I looked at don't care. I've seen a little "gpa calculator worksheet" that one of my favorite pharmacy school posted on their site. They count only the required classes like Cal I and Stat (and maybe pre-cal.).

I just realized I posted in the wrong thread lol. The only C's I have are that class and Biology Lab. (that I plan on re-taking) But wouldn't it affect my Math/Science GPA? Or do they only count the Science GPA?

If it's not a prereq. for any of the pharmacy schools you're applying to then they won't care especially since it's a lower level math class. Most pharmacy schools only look at Calculus and Statistics (and a few might look at precal), so getting a C in Alegbra won't affect your pre-pharmacy gpa (that is if it's not prereq.). If I were you I would be worrying about what I might get in Calculus and Statistics, since you made a C in Algebra. Cal I and Stat are like ten times harder than Algebra, just make sure from now on you get help in your math courses and make it a habit.
If you're still unsure then look at the attachment I put up. That's how Texas Tech figures out student's gpa and you can see what classes they count.

Though you have to make sure you get a good grade in Cal I and Stat. Algebra is easy compared to Calculus.

👍 👍 👍 🙂

Go for it! I like your thinking. If only more people were this way, we'd all live in a happier world.

I'm tempted to try to study Spanish myself this summer (I know only very basic Spanish; I feel like knowing more would be helpful). We'll see how much I can learn on my own...:luck:
