hi, i'm a high school senior. need to make choise between Albany college of pharmacy, which offers me 6 year doctor of pharmcay program and SUNY buffalo. i'm the resident of New york city(isn't buffalo too far and too cold from my home?) :meanie: .

if i go to ACP, i need to pay $12000 loan each year(i get $18000 from grants and the scholarship) .
if i go to buffalo i need to pay $4100 each year.
the problem is if i go to buffalo, after 2 years
pre-pharmacy, i need to reapply their four years doctor of pharmacy program, which is highly competetive, and it's really hard to get in (at least 3.5 GPA)..what if i can't get to their PHD program??

Buffalo only select 56 students from their pre-pharm to their PharmD program. I really worried about my science GPA, particular for biology and chemistry. I'm taking AP Bio now and i'm really struggling and suffering in this crouse(i don't know what is teacher talking about :scared: ), and for chem, i never learned chem in USA.
(i came to America one year ago from China) .

i 'm hard working ppl but not smart. deciding to take pharmacy in college is already a big challenge for me. i still have problem on speaking English 😱
look at buffalo 's criteria for the program http://www.pharmacy.buffalo.edu/school_adm_ea.shtml
isn't too challenging for me to get in??

i see some ppl apply PharmD program in whatever school with a B.S degree and high GPA but don't get in . So isn't better for me to go to Albany's PharmD program directly???

Im at UB right now, I did all my undergrad at UB and used this program
Early assurance ,
This program is pretty much the easiest way. No Pcats even. If you have to apply normally, its alot harder and more selective. They take alot more tahn 56 from UB, actually most of the 100+ students are UB undergrads.

As a plug for UB, i hear its a better school than ACP adn a heck of alot cheaper. Plus UB has a much larger research program with lots of grant money to use if that intrests you. Buffalo is not that bad at all. The weather is not much worse than albany and the campus is in a nice suburb of buffalo. Buffalo isnt NYC but there is plenty to do if you want to do it.

do you know how many student enroll in Early assurance program??
i'm taking AP Bio now and i feel it's really hard for me 🙁

I am also a student at UB after coming in as a freshman as an intended pharmacy major. I am waiting to hear if I am accepted into the Pharmacy school after an interview on Saturday. If you are not solid in bio or chem, I say go to Albany. One little thing can get you kicked out of Early Assurance at Buffalo (as I was). They just made the Early Assurance restrictions worse, as now you have to keep a 3.5 math/science and take the harder physics etc. Do not get me wrong, I love Buffalo and I believe it is a better school than Albany. It really just depends on how much you want to be a pharmacist. If you go into Albany out of high school, you know that you are in, and all you need to do is keep a GPA of a 2.0. If you believe you can overcome the very difficult restrictions of Early Assurance at Buffalo, then by all means, go for it.

so you are used to be a Early Assurance student at UB? and you finished your pre-pharm at UB and now apply Pharm.D???
i'm not smart at bio and chem at all...
i choose pharmacy just because it makes a lot of money.. 😀
i know Buffalo is much better than ACP, but i can' t go to a school if i can't make it there.

Do yourself a favor - don't go into *any* field just for the money. You might find it wasn't worth it.

Visit both schools. You're going to be there for a long time, so living conditions/environment may/may not be conducive to a good experience...

I won't get into a pissing match over who's better--ACP or UB--because both schools will prepare you well for the boards and residency.

ACP is closer to NYC, if that's important to you to see family...

Good luck with your decision.

Tru dat. 👍 While the $$ that a pharmacist makes is very attractive, and you don't have to adore your job to be a good pharmacist, if you're already having doubts about biology and chemistry before you've started any of your pre-reqs you could be setting yourself up for misery. You might want to do some serious thinking before you commit yourself to a 6 year program.

my friends tell me Buffalo has better living conditions and campus enviroment. but i don't care that much. i focus on which program is better for me.
btw i'm planing a trip to Buffalo next week 🙂
anybody tell me what is the chance to apply a Pharm.D program after only 2 year pre-pharm (w/o any degree)??

If I were you, I'd go with ACP. Buffalo's GPA requirement is very hard to maintain for most people. Also, although the difference in tuition between the schools seems large, you can easily pay it off when you graduate.

To be accepted into a PharmD program after only 2 years of pre-reqs requires you to be more competitive than the other applicants in the first place, which as you know, is not an easy task. If I had to estimate, I would say 3.7 overall GPA with 90+ PCAT.

hehe, If i have overall 3.7 GPA, i won't worry about being kicked out of Buffalo's program.

Overall, Buffalo is a better school with way better resources. Suck it up, study hard, and you'll be fine.
