I'm not sure if this happens every year, so perhaps I should have checked past posts, but I want to make sure I get a good answer:

1.)
I was happily holding one acceptance as of yesterday, when I received another. What would make a school think sending an acceptance May 12, three days before May 15, is a good idea? I don't have financial aid information from this school - their recommendation: call the other school and ask for an extension of the May 15 deadline. Is this sensible? Is it AMCAS that has the final say in this (I'll be calling AMCAS today)?

2.) (on another note)
Is it common that to be granted a deferral, one must give up all other active applications (waitlists)? (and this vaguely relates to point 1 above in that asking for an extension by school #1 for school #2 may also annoy school #1 and lower chances for deferral).

Thanks so much.

AMCAS Policies:

  1. Prior to May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), each school permit ALL applicants (except for EDP applicants) - including those applying to M.D./Ph.D. programs and those to whom merit or other special scholarships have been awarded:
    1. A minimum two-week time period for their response to the acceptance offer.
    2. To hold acceptance offers from any other schools without penalty.
  2. After May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), each school implement school-specific procedures for accepted applicants who, without adequate explanation, continue to hold one or more places at other schools. These procedures:
    1. May require applicants to:
      1. Respond to acceptance offers in less than two weeks.
      2. Submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
    2. Should recognize the problems of applicants with multiple acceptance offers, applicants who have not yet received an acceptance offer, and applicants who have not yet been informed about financial aid opportunities at schools to which they have been accepted.
    3. Should permit accepted applicants to remain on other schools' waiting lists and to withdraw if they later receive an acceptance offer from a preferred school.
Its iffy what happens if you get an acceptance in the May 1-May 15 window, but from how I read it, you should have two weeks to decide.

I'd definitely call both schools and check.

It's my understanding that so long as AMCAS and both schools understand that you need time to evaluate financial aid offers that they will give permission for you to hold both acceptances for a two week period. But you need to communicate with everyone.

And congrats on the second acceptance.

Maybe they think that waitlisted applicants already have a good idea about where they would go if they got off the waitlist by this point. And also it might be a tactic to get the applicant to look at this second school prior to commiting themselves to the first school on may 15th. Either way, congrats and let us know how it works out.

make a X vs Y thread. that always works!

Is there any reason to feel hesitant asking school 1 for the time extension (to wait for school 2's fin aid) - especially in light of needing to formally request a deferral in the near future (which would then be after finding out fin aid from school 2)?
