Many of the lists here discuss good REVIEW books used to prepare for Step 1. Many of these books, however, I use as my PRIMARY source. For example, the following are some books I use as my primary source, rather than as review books:
-BRS Embryology
-Costanzo text (not BRS, but much shorter than the full size phys texts or even Ganong's Phys)
-Lippincott's biochem
-Micro made ridic simple
-Katzung's review of pharm.

Am I missing out on important information that is in the full size texts by only knowing the review books?

You are missing out on tons of material but arguably nothing HY. You can not even know everything perfectly in FA. You can come close but I don't think it possible for 99.9% of us. You will be fine.
You are defending your Phd dissertation!

By studying from your review books, you are missing out on all the trash details that will never show up on the step 1, and are spending your time on the info more relevant for the step 1. You will be in good shape for the step 1. Take it easy, and if this is your summer after 1st year, relax and enjoy it because this is probably the last major extended vacation you will get.

Ruban,

Were you the one on American Idol? Just kidding... 🙂

Anyways, to help answer your questions. I think that studying from review books is an excellent way to prepare for the Step I. Most of us cannot memorize textbooks, which translates to a great deal of wasted time spent reading, etc.

Actively learning from Review books by way of highlighting, annotating, etc., is in my opinion, a much more efficient and smarter way to prepare. That's what I did and my Step I turned out satisfactory.

Best,
