Hey everyone I'm taking Organic Chem 2 in the fall. I'm wondering if you guys could give me some tips/ advice on how to prepare for the class and how to do good in it. I didn't really have many problems with orgo one since I worked hard for the A.

What stuff translates/ should I know from Orgo 1? Nomenclature, previous mechanisms, IR/NMR?

And what can I do to prepare for the class in general? I always read ahead for class and did all the problems but anything specific I should know for Orgo 2? Exactly what is it like? Anything that helped you guys?

If you guys could help me out I would really appreciate it!

Thanks everyone!

Orgo II is a lot more memorization than orgo I. There are many more reactions, so it's less of a understanding thing than it is a memorize and use thing.

Study at least a little bit everyday. If you wait too long before reviewing your notes, it will be like trying to read hieroglyphs.

Everything (s)he said, but 100% opposite. Understand acid/base rxns, electronegativities, and other fundamental topics, and Orgo II is a breeze.

I had Orgo II after a summer break, like you. I thought I would catch up/remember what I needed to know. I was wrong and was continuously behind, as I had to take a lot of time to relearn the first semester material. If you are committed and self-motivated, I would take 2 weeks before the semester to develop a mastery of Orgo I. Not just read through your notes, but pretend like you are studying for an Orgo 1 final.

That's just me, though, and many people gets A's without reviewing at all! 🙂

Just go back and review some of the later Orgo 1 mechanisms (Sn1, Sn2, E1, E2, Alkene/Alkyne, etc) and you should be good to go. Orgo 2 is nothing but more mechanisms on a class of compounds you had already been introduced to in Orgo 1 (amines, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, aromatic compounds, etc). Personally, I thought Orgo 2 was easier just because my class did not focus on NMR/IR or the 3D BS stuff like sterochemistry.

I agree with this post. Memorization can only carry you so far if you have a really tough professor. You won't be able to memorize every possible reaction, so understanding the underlying concepts as to why certain types of compounds react the way that they do is critical. Review the above, and make sure you remember nomenclature rules so you don't waste time on exams in case your professor writes out the names of reactants instead of drawing the structures. Keep up with the material and you will be fine!👍

Good luck!:luck:

My experience was that Orgo 1 was harder than Orgo 2. Orgo 2 is mostly memorization. Review the reactions and trends everyday and before you go to sleep (it doesn't take long).
