Hi guys/gals, I am planning on doing a post-bac this summer and possilby for the fall term as well with a subpar 3.1 gpa.

1. Is it really worth doing a post-bac for about 24 credits or should I call different schools to see if they have any type of Dental post-bac classes to take which i think would look much better. Nova has something like this but its for their masters program.

2. I plan on taking the Dats sometime in May/June and aiming for a 20AA. Any chances on getting into a dental school such as NYU, BU, Tufts, Nova?

Ive seen a few success stories in here with people below a 3.0gpa but did well on the Dats 20+ and got in. Of course depends upon interview as well. I just want to know if its going to be worth doing a post bac with about 12-24 credits b/c it will show improvement and bump the gpa to a 3.2 or if anyone knows of schools that has a dental post bac program b/c i would probably take the route of taking dental courses instead.

If anyone is in my situation or been through it fill me in 😕

I am not doing any kind of formal post bac program. I'm just retaking prereqs that I did bad in, and other upper level science courses. Do that for a few semesters with GOOD grades, do well on DAT, then apply when you feel you're competetive. :luck: Get a good idea of what competetive is based on SDN.

i haven't done a post-bacc..but here's what i think:

-u should edit your thread title...so that ppl know what the thread is about.
-i think most forms of 'extra schooling' will help ppl get into professional schools
-since i got interviews @ both BU and NYU...u would too, probably, cuz we have similar stats.

gdluck

I took classes related to dental school, ie: bio classes, as an unclassified grad student not enrolled in a post-bacc program that I never intended to finish.

I have a 19AA on the DAT, a 2.8 sciGPA, and a 3.3 GPA overall. I was waitlisted at three schools after college, and after enrolling in more classes and doing well, I was accepted this year to 2 schools.

Take classes, apply EARLY, and keep in touch with the schools so as to keep your name in their attention and you'll do great. I was very lucky and you can be, too. GOOD LUCK!

Take a look back at some of my posts. I don't want to rewrite them again, but it's the best advice I have for you. I took post bacc classes after not getting in. If you passed all your pre-reqs, stick with upper division sciences. By retaking courses, you aren't really helping you AADSAS GPA, it's a total of ALL the courses you took, including those you retake. If you get an F in Bio201 then retake it and get an A, you're still at a C average as far as AADSAS is concerned. Sure a 2.0 is better than a 0.0, but an A in an upper division science will look better and increase your GPA the same amount on the AADSAS application (which is the ONLY one they look at, your transcripts are just for confirmation).

Your stats should be enough to get you an interview, which is where your focus should be. Beef up your application for interview day, so when that day comes it won't be.

"Oh, I see here you spent your last year taking 200 level courses you got F's in."

It will be...

"WOW! You took 16 credits of upper division science and earned a 4.0!? Must have been a busy year, taking classes, working and doing communtiy service. Very impressive."

"Thank you. Yes, it as been a busy year, but I wanted to show that I have what it takes to make a great dental student and I had a great time volunteering at _________......."

Get my drift.

thanks to all, I will take classes this summer and for the fall. just gotta get 20's + on the dat. 😉
