I am currently a business student majoring in finance. I'm 55 hours away from my degree and I would like to finish. I no longer want a career in business I want to be a pediatrician as far as seeing children from birth till adult. I would like to know what do I have to do to get on this path. Do I have to take extra class, add class on now, take test, like I need to know everything!!! Please help

In short, you need to take the prerequisite courses, which are; a year of organic chemistry,a year of physics,a year of general chemistry, and a year of biology. I believe you will need to take sociology and psychology as well but these are new requirements do I'm not positive. You also need to take the MCAT. Shadowing and clinical volunteering are de facto requirements as well

Relax and stop reposting this. That is against TOS.

How are your grades like?

1. Find out what the pre reqs are for med school (bio 1&2, chem 1&2, physics 1&2, orgo etc..) and decide which courses you need to take. You can google search this or use the search function on this website. Additionally, you can buy the MSAR and see the requirements for each individual school you are interested in.

2. after taking the required courses, plan accordingly for the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). Be advised the test is changing soon.

3. Start looking for places to volunteer. You will need clinical and non clinical experience.

4. At some point you will need to shadow a doctor or two.

5. Most applicants have research experience, while not required, it will benefit you to get some research experience and also make you more competitive. Furthermore, getting some form of Leadership experience can also be a nice touch.

Edit: Anything else you need to know can probably be found in these three threads.

I asked one of the mods if they could potentially merge the threads. Make everything clean and such.

I would suggest starting with some shadowing and perhaps some volunteering in a medical facility (hospital, outpatient clinic, etc). Take a good look at the work and the environment before jumping into a lot of courses only to discover that medicine is not a good fit for you.

You may have some of the pre-reqs already thanks to general education requirements, etc for college. If you have elective space before college graduation you can add those you are missing or if there is no wiggle room in your 55 hours of college, you can look into a post-bac program that takes college grads and puts them into the pre-reqs along with shadowing, research and the other unwritten pre-reqs for admission.

Start with the stickies at the top of the pre-allo page. That should give you a place to start.
