Good afternoon good people of SDN.

I need assistance choosing an SMP. I am interested in the program which offers me the greatest chance to become accepted to medical school in the least amount of time. Unfortunately specific details on the links between these programs and medical college aren't easy to find, nor are the percentage of SMP students who are accepted into medical school. Ideally I am looking for a program at a medical college to which I can apply in June (for MD) and receive some consideration based on my first (fall) semester academic performance.

I have applied to these programs:

Tulane MBS Biochem and Molecular Bio - Accepted
Case Western MS Medical Physiology - Accepted
Geisinger MBS - Accepted
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg MHS Micro and Immune - Accepted

Rutgers MBS - Pending
Tufts MBS - Pending
PCOM MBS - Pending
Vermont MMS - Pending
ACHE MSB - Pending

RFU MS - Rejected

I could not apply to Georgetown, Cincinnati, or Drexel, as my GPA cGPA (2.1) is below their screening criteria.

Thank you all for any assistance you perspective you can provie.

Choose the cheapest SMP...

What will help you to get accepted to med school is to have a 3.7+ in your SMP, high MCAT score, ECs, good LORs and research irrespective of where you got that SMP for the most part.

Given your low GPA, you might have to complete the SMP before applying.

Based on your very low cumulative GPA, I would personally pick the one that has a guaranteed seat for meeting their GPA metric in the program.

Pick whichever one is cheapest, lasts only a year, and has the best linkage to the parent med school.

I'm just about to finish my SMP at Geisinger. You're welcome to PM me with any questions.

A current Geisinger student gave me a call a few days ago, and we spoke at length about the program. She seemed very genuine in her enthusiasm about the program, even though the spring semester has been mostly distance-learning. She told me that guaranteed interviews are offered to the top 20% of students who applied to medical college the year they they enrolled in the SMP and that this is based entirely on fall semester performance. She also encouraged me to apply to their medical program this summer if I choose to enroll, based on my MCAT score. 20% is low, but I am prepared to put in every effort necessary for success.

I was feeling pretty good about Geisinger, as this is the only program to which I applied which seems to offer guaranteed linking except for Rutgers, which has yet to give me a decision. Then I heard back from UVM the next day. Their program looks awesome: very academically rigorous and targeted towards subjects relevant to a future clinical healthcare workers. I am undecided again, but the only info I can find on linking is the website which only says to contact admissions to find out about the linking opportunities.

I have narrowed down my list to Geisinger, UVM, and Rutgers if they get back to me soon. The JHB program, while very interesting, seems to focus on material more relevant to specialists and researchers and doesn't offer that critical MD school link. If I were 10 years younger, I would be super interested.

It seems like you know what to look for. If Geisinger ends up being the best linkage SMP option out of the ones that accept you then that sounds great. If given the opportunity in one of the other programs that gives you a guaranteed acceptance, on that list I know PCOM does if you meet the requirements, then I would highly recommend going there regardless of what they teach or what you will learn. The goal at the end of the day is to get into med school. What you learn, though not irrelevant, won’t matter as much if you can’t get into medical school.

Nova Southeastern University MBS has guaranteed interview with their MD program with rolling admissions it’s a one year MBS with interviews after fall semester. Have you tried applying to them? They have rolling admissions and they respond about a week after you submit your application with decisions. They also provide interview and mcat prep.

i believe LECOM MMS has a similar setup with DO program but NOVA is MD
