I went through the forum i couldnt find a thread to post this is so i made this one
I am PGY2 internal medicine resident in a good university based program , our program does not offer a heme onc fellowship, i have done 2 rotations and going to do a third one here soon to hopefully get good LORS for application in next years cycle.
I wanted to do an away elective for a month to get some away exposure and to get a good LOR as well.
My choices are New York Colombia Presbyterian Hospital Heme onc rotation vs University of Connecticut rotation.
- please let me know which one would be better for me in the long run while applying to get a fellowship in heme onc
Thank you

Hey any one ? please do reply if u have any suggestions ? thanks
this is as a resident not as medical student to be clear .

hey Niviancer, thanks for replying , umm i didnt say that Uconn will be better , thats actually my question that which one do u guys think is a better program.
If u r asking my personal opinion, i have not visited either place but Uconn has 2 fellowship positions and i think colombia has 5 of them. Just on that basis i was thinking may b colombia , but dont want to waste my time as i get only one elective away a year. Thanks.

I think you should go somewhere in between those two programs in terms of competitiveness. I'm sure a letter of rec from a Columbia doc might be better when it comes to applying overall, but it would also be a lot harder to match there in the end.

There is no right answer to this. I will be applying to a different specialty next year and I also asked the same questions over and over.
1. You might not match in Columbia but getting a strong letter from somebody there might help your application.
2. Impressing at UCONN might land you a spot there.

It depends on how competitive you are, where candidates from your univ have gone to in the past.
By the end of the day the networking and strong LOR is what matters. Go with your gut feeling

Hmm, thanks great advice all , just couple of weeks to decide now, will keep u guys updated 🙂
