I have the choose between 2 jobs. In September I will be starting first year of pre-vet and am not sure which of the two jobs would help me get into vet school. The first one would be working at the local SPCA, cleaning & handling the animals. I also know the president and would most likely get a very good LOR from him. The second would be working at the local Youth center with children and working in the community. The second one would allow me to really get involved in my town and do some volunteering at big events. The first one would give me more animal experience.

Since I plan on spending my entire next summer shadowing my equine vet, volunteering at a SA clinic and possibly working as a vet assistant somewhere else. So it's really one or the other and I don't know which would be better.

So extracurricular or animal hours?? 😕

You'll be applying to AVC, right? Since animal experience is worth 10% of the application and extracurriculars only 5%, on a strategic basis I would lean towards the SPCA job, assuming you do also have other extracurriculars.

Also important to consider is which you would enjoy more. Which place gives you a better feeling? Can you get along with your future coworkers? What exactly would you be doing in each job? I also know that working in a shelter can be really hard emotionally, but I'm not sure how the youth centre position would compare.

The percentages are really making me lean towards the SPCA.

I was pretty involved in HS, was in almost every comittee, was president of a few and was in the student advisory comittee senior year. I was also the official photographer for all events.

I don't have a lot of vet hours, but will be working on those next summer. As for animal experience, I have a lifetime of training/showing horses and handling farm animals.

This upcoming year I will get really involved in the pre-vet club and get as much volunteering as possible and also join lots of comittees.

I'm pretty sure I would prefer working at the SPCA. Plus, I worked 2 full summers doing day camps with kids, so Youth center would not be a new experience. The reason I am considering it is really to get involved in the community at the volunteering events.

It's just that someone told me once that volunteering at the SPCA is kind of useless and that I should get in with vets. I just decided to go into pre-vet last month so was too late to even volunteer at the clinics. (They are very busy).

The emotional part of the SPCA does not bother me, the animals are very well cared for and rarely stay overly long before finding a good home. 🙂

This is really off topic, but I was wondering if someone could answer this for me here, because I don't want to start another thread and can't find any threads about this. I'm going to be at NSAC in Nova Scotia in Sept, but I graduated HS in french and did my first year of undergrad in french. I feel 100% comfortable in both languages and was wondering if I could apply both to AVC and U de Montréal after my 2 yrs of pre-vet?

I'd choose the SPCA. I'd definitely pick the animal or vet experience over community/other experience, especially if you think you're going to get a good LOR out of the deal.

You might want to check the U MTL website, since they're in Quebec I'm not sure if you'd be able to apply. I'm from Ontario and I'm ONLY applicable to OVC because I'm not a resident of any other province or territory associated with the other vet schools. If you have Quebec residency, then I'd say apply to both, but you'll need to check with MTL to see if NB residents are covered. To be a resident you need to have lived in the province for at least 12 months (Its either 12 or 24 months) without studies.

If you are able to apply to MTL, then apply to both schools- applying to as many as you can gives you the best advantage of getting in. Best of luck!

P.s. I'd go for the SPCA job if I were you, but I was never really involved in the community...my main exra curricular was riding horses, and that was because I was in love with it and not necessarily because it was animal-related (well it was, but not because it could help give me brownie points to vet school)

NB has an agreement with Québec. We have a certain number of seats at all of their universities in all health careers. There are 2 seats for us at U de Montreal in vet med.

I'm not sure I would have all of the requirements after the pre-vet program, but maybe I will apply during my 3rd yr of animal science if I don't get accepted first time at AVC 🙂

As for the job: I decided to go with the SPCA! 😀 They have an angora bunny that I can't wait to comb out and play with! (that's not why I chose that job though, haha!) I will be able to get some extracurric. at NSAC next year.

.... go figure... Quebecers hate us Ontario-ins, parce que nos francais est tres mauvais! lol. Best of luck!

It's probably because NB is a billingual province, haha. 😀

and thanks!!

So is ON... and we have many french-mostly speaking people up north 😕 Oh well, at least we can enjoy Beavertails on both sides.

NB is the only ''official'' bilingual province in Canada.

I love Beavertails😍

SO!? we have the only "official" National Capital Region in Canada!!

😉

Just to let you know, Ontario does have an agreement with Quebec for their french speaking students who want to study in vet med. 😉
If you're french and you live anywhere in Canada, I'm pretty sure you can apply there.

I am definately not competent enough in french to be able to undertake vet studies!! Though I was in french immersion for the first half of high school- and so I only knew the french names of parts of the cell, etc lol. I would probably end up explaining things to my english speaking clients in french, and then pull out my english-french dictionary 🙁 Or better yet-- Google translate... then the computer-voice-person can just explain err'thang for me! 😀
