Hi everyone!

I´m an international medical graduate from Austria and I´d like to work as a doctor in Canada/U.S. My first choice was Canada, but I´m also open for the USA depending on the “easiest/ shortest” way to get into a residency program. I´m planning to do the MCCEE in the end of May 2014 and I found out that the MCEE is close to the USLME Step 2 CK, so I was thinking to make both exams. Does anyone know if it´s possible to get into a residency program/job offer only with USLME 2 CK (e.g. having very good scores) and not doing USMLE Step 1? Or is ABSOLUTELY necessary to do every USMLE step to get a job offer, respectively to be able to register in any resident matching program? I also heard it´s not necessary to be a permanent resident of the USA to get into these resident matching programs, is that right?

Is it possible to do USMLE step 2 before USMLE Step 1?

I´m just curious if it´s a good idea to make both exams and if yes , if I really have better chances to get into any resident program with only USMLE step 2.

I really would appreciate it if anyone could tell me something about how this whole system works.

Thanks!!

You need step 1, 2ck and 2cs for most residencies. It is easier for IMGs to match in usa than canada. If you refer to the intro section to First Aid, there is a good summary on the protocal for IMGs.

Are you a Canadian PR or Citizen? If not, Canada will be a closed door, they will not take you.

You definitely need to do Step 1, even to get an elective you need Step 1. To do anything in the US except for unpaid observerships you need Step 1. You will need to do CK and CS and then apply for your ECFMG certificate. If you do not complete both Step 1 and 2 you will not get ECFMG certificate and you will not be allowed to do residency in the US. This is the law. You don't need to be a PR in the US to get residency, but without PR it makes it harder because the program need to sort out a visa for you which is usually a hassle.

You can do Step 2 before Step 1. You need to do both exams just to apply. Forget not doing one exam, if you don't do both you will get rejected from every single residency you apply to no questions asked.
