Help!! Destroyer Gen Chem Question 28

For those of you with destroyer, i am stuck on question 28 which involves the nernst equation, i never seem to figure out what it means.

Why is the answer E, can B also apply here... i am so confused about this
what should i know for this problem?

bah..i've never heard of the nernst equation popping up on the real DAT. thats definitely one of those things that i just skip over.
 
i know, i have been skipping over it mostly in destroyer, i guess im not the only one. But now im tryin to learn its basic concept this time around just in case.
 
I believe that the idea is that since the H+ is being removed, the Q will change ([Products]/[Reactants]). Q will become greater, which means that you are subtracting a larger number, thus leaving a smaller E value.

I hope this doesn't show up, because it can be tricky. I believe this is the correct interpretation.

pH = pKa + log Q
It wouldn't be too outlandish for them to ask you to calculate the pH of a buffer system using this equation if they do the math out for you. Also understanding this equation and how each term relates to each other is important to understanding the concepts behind buffer systems.
 
wow i had a problem with that today too! but i decided to skip it.. how are you guys doing on the destoryer?

Right on! Totally agree. Just because you don't have any long calculation problems doesn't mean you should understand the mechanics of the equations. Every equation has a moral attached to it...just a way of simplifying a number of ideas into a convenient form.
