HELP: Do Masters at Tulane or UMDNJ?

Ultimately I would like to have a career in dentistry or medicine, haven't decided. I'm from NJ and I was accepted to both UMDNJ in Newark, NJ or Tulane in New Orleans. UMDNJ offers a 1 year master's in "biomedical sciences" and tulane offers 1 yr masters in "cell and molecular biology." Lived on the east coast my entire life, so maybe a year in New Orleans would be a change of pace. Is one school better than the other? Any advantages/disadvantages? Tuition is about the same for 1 year... a little under 20k..

Tulane is a cool place but New Orleans will definitely take some getting used it. Fun atmosphere, great food, great music, but definitely different than either the east or west coast (I just finished an MPH at Tulane). They also have a 1-year masters in Pharmacology for pre-meds in case you're interested in other programs.

New Orleans has a pretty high crime rate but if you're smart about where you go and who you go with, you should be alright. I would highly HIGHLY suggest visiting the school and the area before deciding (if you have the means).

Basically don't walk around alone at night, or hang out with drug dealers/criminals, and you'll be fine.

I like New Orleans....but I could be biased. 🙄

thinking about it, im leaning towards umdnj, only cause its in state, 2 hour drive away. new orleans seems fun, but i doubt i will have anytime to enjoy the city while trying to study.. that would make sense? maybe now's not the time to want to move away from home especially if i was accepted to my state school.. but if tulane has something to offfer that umdnj doesn't then I may consider that.

Don't forget about HURRICANES!!!!

I would definitely stay away from New Orleans for that reason alone.

Remember, NO is several feet below sea level, which means another Katrina is not unlikely.

They really keep it in the family at UMDNJ. If the goal of your masters degree is to get into med/ dental school, you might be better off in Newark. Unfortunately.
